Olympic Theatre Arts, 414 N. Sequim Ave., welcomes back-to-back jazz concerts on Aug. 1-2.

“Friends of Brubeck” appear at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, combining their energetic rhythms with the soulful tones of New York vocalist Elinore O’Connell.

The next day O’Connell returns at 2 p.m. in a more intimate matinee setting accompanied by Linda Dowdell on piano and Craig Buhler on alto sax.

Both performances include Brubeck classics like “Take Five,” along with Dowdell arrangements that yield playful Brubeckian results and the “retro-pop” interpretations that define the band’s collaboration with O’Connell (“Moondance,” “The Look of Love,” “You Go To My Head”).

“Friends of Brubeck” features Dowdell as pianist and arranger, Buhler on saxophone, Ted Enderle on bass and Terry Smith on drums.

Dowdell said she has an affinity for Dave Brubeck’s blend of classical and improvisational jazz elements while Buhler counts Paul Desmond, Brubeck’s long-time musical partner, as one of his major influences saying he has spent decades trying to “get inside Desmond’s head.”

O’Connell has performed the past three summers to sold-out audiences at the Dungeness Schoolhouse.

The show offers a beverage bar service and limited reserved seating. Tickets are available in advance for $20 each or $35 for both shows at the box office from 1-5 p.m. weekdays or by calling 683-7326.
