Track & Field: Sequim posts state-best marks at P.T. meet

Some of the top athletes in the 2A ranks were on the track and in the field last week in Port Townsend. And they were all wearing purple and gold.

Some of the top athletes in the 2A ranks were on the track and in the field last week in Port Townsend.

And they were all wearing purple and gold.

Alex Barry threw a state 2A-best 181 feet, 3 inches in the javelin while teammate Waverly Shreffler posted a 2A state-best 59.49-second mark in the 400-meter race as Sequim competed with athletes from Coupeville, Klahowya, Ketchikan (Alaska) and the host Port Townsend Redhawks on April 16.

Shreffler, who also owns the top 2A mark in the 800 meter (2:21.95, per athletic.net), edged Coupeville’s Makana Stone by 0.48 of a second in last week’s showdown between two of the state’s best. Stone’s mark is the second-best recorded effort among 1A girls.

Shreffler added a win in the 800 (2:18) and helped the Wolves’ 4×400 relay team take first place (4:18.80).

Sequim’s Cheryl Armstrong posted personal bests in both discus (96-2) and shot put (29-11) to take first place in both events, while Mattie Clark was a double winner in the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles (17.98 and 55.10)

Sequim’s Heidi Vereide won both the 200-meter race (28.53) and the long jump (14-9.25) and Emily van Dyken took top honors in the pole vault (8-0). SHS teammate Alysha Graham set a personal best in the discus by more than 15 feet (91-8) to take second.

On the boys’ side, Barry won three individual events and helped Sequim’s 4×400 relay squad (with Miguel Moroles, Logan Habner and Oscar Herrera) post a 3:34.80 winning time, 10th-best in the 2A ranks.

Barry’s 181-3 mark in the javelin is just 7 inches off his personal best. He also won the triple jump (41-7) and discus (119-1, a personal best).

Herrera won both hurdles events, while Moroles posted wins in both the 200-meter (24.05) and 400-meter (53.68) races.

Austin Adams posted a personal best to win the shot put with a 42-foot, 10.5-inch throw, while teammate Josh Cibene equalled a second-best to win the pole vault with a 13-foot mark; he’s tied for the sixth best mark in the state 2A rankings.

Sequim’s 4×100 relay team (Herrera, Eric Hermosada, Jason Springer and Quinton Johnson) placed first at 45.88 seconds.

Sequim senior Mikey Cobb was second in the 1600 meters (4:54) and teammate Jackson Oliver won the high jump (5-10) and was second in the long jump (18-3).

The Wolves are back on the track and in the field when they host Coupeville, North Mason and Kingston on April 23. It’s Sequim’s lone home meet of the 2015 season.

Select Wolves compete at the Bremerton Invitational on April 30 and Sequim joins Bremerton in Poulsbo to take on the host North Kitsap Vikings on April 30.
