Work began to install new Americans with Disabilities Act compliant curb ramps on the north side of a portion of East Fir Street along the Olympic Discovery Trail  on July 21.

Lakeside Industries will replace the curbs between Sequim Avenue and North Blake tentatively through Sept. 9.

David Garlington, City of Sequim assistant public works director, said that Lakeside underbid its next competitor by about $27,000 at $169,934 while the city budgeted for $275,000.

From 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. weekdays, pedestrian and traffic flaggers will be out. Parking will not be allowed on either side of Fir Street in these areas during construction.

Pipes repair boost streets near post office

In the next few weeks, Garlington said he expects work to begin on replacing and upsizing water pipes, restoring pavement and bringing sidewalks into ADA compliance on four streets and one alley west of the Sequim U.S. Post Office.

Repairs will take place on East Bell Street, East Maple Street, East Maple Alley and East Prairie Street (all between Sequim Avenue and South Sunnyside Avenue) and South Sunnyside Avenue between East Maple Street and East Prairie Street.

Garlington said Interwest Construction, Inc., of Burlington, who is contracted to help with the Sequim Civic Center, was the only bidder at $732,409.73, even after city staff sought more bidders who said they were busy with projects. The city’s project estimate was about $12,500 more than Interwest’s bid.

Sequim City Councilors unanimously approved the project contract plus a 10 percent contingency on July 28. The project’s funding comes out of the city’s water improvement construction project funds.

Garlington said he would meet with the construction company next week and they would tentatively begin work in the next two to three weeks.
