Sequim High athletes recently were rewarded for their hard work on the field and on the pitch this spring.

Four players from Sequim’s fastpitch squad, two from the baseball team and another from Sequim’s boys soccer team were named all-Olympic League first team players, following postseason-worthy spring seasons.

They join Sequim’s Jack Shea and Alex McMenamin, who were named Olympic League’s golf MVPs, and all-league golfers Travis Priest, Brianna Kettel and Sarah Shea, for postseason honors.

Fastpitch

Senior third baseman Olivia Kirsch, junior pitcher McKenzie Bentz, junior outfielder Allysen Montelius and sophomore first baseman Kaylee Gumm were each named to the all-Olympic League first team.

Senior shortstop MaryLu Clift and senior outfielder Tia Bourm were named to the all-league second team.

Gumm led the team with a .552 batting average, 1.086 slugging average, six home runs and 33 RBIs.

Kirsch led the team with eight doubles and hit .411 with a home run and 22 RBIs. Montelius hit .387 and drove in 25 runs, second on the squad. Bentz started 13 games and struck out a team-high 49 batters in 69-and-two-thirds innings. She also hit .347 with 23 RBIs.

Clift led the team with runs scored (29) and walks (13). She hit .382 with three home runs and 22 RBIs. Bourm had a .385 batting average and .418 on-base percentage.

Sequim finished the regular season with a 9-3 mark to tie for second place in league and took the West Central District’s fourth seed to the class 2A state tournament, going 2-2 at districts.

Peninsula rival Port Angeles blanketed the all-league team after going undefeated in league play and losing just once — at the district tournament — before qualifying for state with the West Central District’s fifth seed. P.A. pitcher Nizhoni Wheeler was named league MVP, Randy Steinman was named league Coach of the Year and the Roughriders took home the league Sportsmanship award. P.A. all-league first teamers include Natalie Steinman, Alicia Howell and Carly Gouge, and second-teamers include Taylor Clark, Brennan Gray and Hunter-Anne Coburn.

Baseball

Sequim senior pitcher Tanner Rhodefer and junior second baseman Evan Hurn were named to all-Olympic League’s baseball first team after helping the Wolves qualify for the West Central District tourney, then go 3-1 at districts and earn a berth in the class 2A state tourney.

Rhodefer, the staff ace, went 5-4 with a team-best 2.63 ERA (per seven innings), with 64 strikeouts in 61-and-a-third innings, Opponents hit just .243 against the southpaw.

Hurn paced the SHS offense with a .400 batting average and led the Wolves with nine extra-base hits (five doubles, three triples and a home run), 18 RBIs, 26 hits, a .524 on-base percentage and .615 slugging average.

Earning spots on the all-Olympic League second team were junior designated hitter Nigel Christian and senior outfielder Dusty Bates. Christian led the team with two home runs and was third with 12 RBIs. He hit .246 and had a slugging percentage of .426. Bates was third on the team with a .354 batting average and second with a .475 on-base percentage. He tied for the team lead with 13 walks and was second on the team with 23 hits and 19 runs scored. He also drove in 11 runs and stole seven bases in eight tries.

Sequim shared the Staff of the Year award with league champ North Kitsap. North Mason took home the league’s Sportsmanship award.

Port Angeles players named to the all-league team were three second teamers: outfielders Jace Bohman and Bradley Curan, and pitcher Travis Paynter.

Boys soccer

Senior midfielder Eli Berg was named an all-Olympic League first team player this spring. Berg tallied two goals and tied for the team lead with seven assists.

Sequim teammate Cameron Chase, a junior midfielder/forward, was named to the second team with seven goals — tied for the team lead — and four assists.

Berg and Chase helped the Wolves to an 8-4 league mark, a 9-6-2 overall mark and berth in the West Central District playoffs.

Kingston goalkeeper Alex Worland was named the league’s MVP. Port Angeles coach Chris Saari earned Coach of the Year honors and the Olympic Trojans earned the league’s Sportsmanship Award.

Golf

Joining Sequim’s five all-league golfers in postseason honors was Gary Kettel, who was named the Olympic League Girls co-Coach of the Year with Bremerton’s Ivaly Alexander. Kettel’s Sequim squad took home the Team Sportsmanship award.

Port Angeles’ Mark Mitrovich and Chimacum’s Mitch Black were named Olympic League Boys co-Coaches of the Year and Mitrovich’s Roughriders earned the league’s boys Team Sportsmanship award.
