commissioners meeting set
A special meeting/joint public workshop before the board of county commissioners and the county Planning Commission regarding compliance strategies, work plan and public participation processes to address recent noncompliance and invalidity ruling of the Western Washington Growth Management Hearings Board will take place at 6:30 p.m. tonight, Aug. 6, at the commissioners’ meeting room at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles. After hours the public meeting entrance is from Fourth Street.
Support your local senior center
The third annual Sequim Senior Activity Center benefit sale takes place Thursday, Aug. 7, and Friday, Aug. 8. Early bird access for members only is from 4-6 p.m., Wednesday. Thursday’s hours are 9 a.m.-7 p.m.; Friday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. The sale supports the center’s operating budget and the scholarship fund for Sequim High School seniors. Last year’s sale netted $8,300 and the goal this year is $10,000. There also will be a bake sale.
Volunteers needed
The Clallam County Fair is looking for volunteers to help with the trout fishing tank, fair information booth and gourmet grub kitchen. Shifts are three hours and volunteers can enjoy a free day at the fair, which is Aug. 14-17. Call the fair office at 417-2551 for more details.
Board accepts initial offer for land
The Sequim school board accepted an offer to purchase about two acres of land adjacent to Helen Haller Elementary School, just north of Fir Street.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The board voted 5-0 to accept the offer at a special meeting July 31.
A closing date on the purchase is set in early October, said Sequim schools superintendent Bill Bentley.

urged to use MyVote
Washington state has jumped to the next level of voter education by promoting an online one-stop, customized voter information feature in time for the Aug. 19 Top 2 Primary. It’s called MyVote.
The free service is available 24-7 at the secretary of state’s Web site, which includes a user-friendly page dedicated to the Top 2 Primary that voters have adopted, www.vote.wa.gov. MyVote gives personalized, specific information to each voter who logs on with his or her name and birthdate – voting status, Voters’ Pamphlet entries in the voter’s district, ballot drop box sites, voting history and contact information for federal, state, local and judicial officials, including Web sites and e-mail addresses. The information is tailored to each individual voter.
Meet the candidates
The Clallam County Democratic Club invites the public to meet incumbent County Commissioner Mike Chapman and his challenger David Fox at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, at the Pioneer Memorial Park clubhouse, 387 E. Washington St., Sequim. Participants will have the opportunity to question both candidates. Refreshments will be available. Clallam County Democratic Headquarters, located at 150 S. Calling all philatelists
Strait Stamp Society is holding its annual show on Aug. 9 at the Sequim Masonic Hall located at 700 S. Fifth Ave. Hours are 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission is free and there will be free stamps for children as well as door prizes, exhibits and dealers who will buy and sell items. U.S. Postal Service officials will be on site for special show cancelations that feature the Railroad Bridge Park trestle. A special exhibit on Japanese comic book stamps by well-known Seattle area comic book expert Aron Tarbuck will be part of the show. For those who have old collections of stamps, postcards, letters, etc., dealers will give free appraisals and/or offers to purchase.
Hood Canal bridge traffic delays
Washington State Department of Transportation is conducting annual inspections of the state Route 104 Hood Canal bridge and drivers are advised of possible bridge closures of up to 30 minutes. The work is scheduled for 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11, through Wednesday, Aug. 13.
The Hood Canal bridge is inspected each year for structural problems, mechanical and electrical operations. In addition, a full-time maintenance crew monitors its structure, ensures pontoons are watertight and keeps it operational for drivers. For more information, visit www.HoodCanalBridge.com.

Fall 2008 bachelor’s degree
applications available
Applications for the fall 2008 entering class for the Bachelor of Applied Science in Applied Management degree program at Peninsula College are being accepted. Geared to working adults, BAS classes are held in the evening on the Port Angeles campus. Hands_on management experience is gained during two terms of internship with employers in the public, private and tribal sector. Potential career fields include health care, government, criminal justice, counseling, computer technologies and natural resource management, among others. Hepatitis project begins
The Clallam County Department of Health and Human Services is joining forces with the Washington state Department of Health to offer free hepatitis C testing to high-risk adults and provide free hepatitis A and B vaccinations to individuals who have hepatitis C. This one-year hepatitis pilot project is designed to identify the estimated 69,000 people in the state who have hepatitis C but don’t know it and offer an effective intervention to help them protect the health of their livers. Individuals who are at high risk for hepatitis C and should be tested include:
• Persons who received transplants, transfusions or other blood products before 1992
• Persons who use drugs or have used drugs in the past
• Persons who received clotting factors before 1987 for hemophilia or organ transplants
• Persons who received tattoos, body piercing and other body art with unsterilized equipment
• Persons who have had sexual contact with an infected person or a history of high-risk sexual practices
• Health care workers who may have had a blood exposure related to their occupation
