At this level, payback stings a little more.

Fife’s Trojans, seeking revenge on the team that knocked them from a 2A state tourney berth the year before, got a grand slam from Cameron Boozer in the bottom of the seventh inning, knocking Sequim out of the West Central District playoffs’ first round 7-5 on May 11.

Senior Matt Bereiter held the Trojans at bay for six innings, giving up just three runs (two earned) on five hits and striking out three.

Fellow senior Alex Gillis looked to close it out, but Fife loaded the bases for Boozer, who had ripped a two-run home run in the third inning.

Sequim jumped out to a 5-1 lead after two-and-a-half innings off of Trojan starter Nick Lemoncelli, who issued four first-inning walks and gave up an RBI single to Jeremie Oliver.

Sequim got three runs in the third inning, highlighted by Mike Bereiter’s first career home run. Tyler Forshaw and Gillis scored on a passed ball and error later that inning.

The Trojans, however, got two back later that inning on Boozer’s home run.

Lemoncelli and reliever Collin Nilson quieted the Wolves’ bats through the seventh.

With the game on the line, Sequim coach Dave Ditlefsen went to Gillis – the same southpaw who tossed a four-hit complete game against Fife at districts in 2009.

The Trojans worked Gillis for three walks before Boozer’s walk-off blast.

"Gillis has pitched in several big games for us over the past four years and I had full confidence in him to get the last three outs," Ditlefsen said, "but it wasn’t his day."

It was the final game for six Sequim seniors – Gillis, Oliver, both Bereiter brothers, Jake Lotzgesell and Matt Rief.

"All six seniors played all four years of high school baseball," Ditlefsen said. "They are a great group. It was a very enjoyable season with a great group of kids."
