Lela May Sturm Adrian
A graveside service for
Sequim resident Lela May
Sturm Adrian will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Aug. 6, at Sequim View Cemetery, 1305 Sequim-Dungeness Way. A reception follows at the family home. Mrs. Adrian died Aug. 2, 2008, at age 77, following a two-year battle with colon cancer.
She was born March 16, 1931, in Van Nuys, Calif., to Howard Rowe and Henrietta Louise McArdle Teel. She graduated from Van Nuys High School.
She married Gordon Adrian on Nov. 27, 1997, at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Port Angeles. She married Bob Sturm on May 1, 1982. He died of cancer on Dec. 28, 1994.
She worked at a General Motors factory in California.
After moving to Sequim more than 30 years ago, she worked and retired from Rayonier Mill in Port Angeles, where she was an accounting secretary.
She loved her grandchildren, the Seahawks, the Mariners and gardening.
She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Sequim and the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Port Angeles.
She is survived by her husband, Gordon Adrian of Sequim; sons and daughter-in-law Steven Long of Oregon City, Ore., and Alan and Nikki Sturm of Sequim; daughter and son-in-law Denise and Rick Russell of Renton; brother and sister-in-law Howard and Donna Teel of Port Angeles; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Bertha Cozart McFadden
A memorial service for
Sequim resident Bertha Cozart McFadden will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, at Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel, 108 W. Alder St., Sequim. Mrs. McFadden died July 28, 2008, at the age of 87.
She was born Feb. 25, 1921, in Manson to Frederic Alfred and Edith Agnes Story Wise. She was Wenatchee Apple Blossom queen of 1939.
She married Laurence Riley Cozart in 1939 in Wenatchee. He preceded her in death in December 1995. She married Marion McFadden in 2000 in Chelan. He preceded her in death in 2004. She was a homemaker, rancher, seamstress, wife, mother and farmer.
She is survived by her daughters Judith Westbrook of Kansas and Jeanette Cozart of Sequim, sisters Maymie Cozart and Edna Anderson, four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Marion Nell Larsen
A celebration of life for Port Townsend resident Marion Nell Larsen will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at Grace Lutheran Church, 1120 Walker St., Port Townsend. Mrs. Larsen died July 17, 2008, at the age of 97. A reception at the church follows the service.
She was born March 24, 1911, in Port Townsend to Phillip John and Mary Silva McCullen.
Being the first of 12 children, she learned early on the joys and hardships of child care and homemaking, which prepared her for becoming a devoted and loving wife and mother.
On June 1, 1929, she married Coast Guardsman and later Crown Zellerbach millwright Ingwald (Lars) Larsen. He preceded her in death on Aug. 9, 1999, shortly after celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary.
In 1979 they renewed their marriage vows at Grace Lutheran Church, where they had become members.
Mrs. Larsen was a homemaker and was for some years employed as a cook at St. John’s Hospital, now Jefferson General Hospital. She was active in her church in the Ladies Aid, a member of the quilting group and the Birthday Club, a group of women who met once a month to celebrate each other’s birthdays and to raise money for charities. She also lovingly washed and ironed the linens for the altar.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Richard and Deborah Larsen of Clarkston; daughters and sons-in-law Patricia and Wayne DuVal of Elmira, Ore.; Donna Nouss of Port Angeles; and Eleanor and Ronald Roberts of Des Moines; brothers Clifford McCullen of Tacoma and Daniel McCullen of Seattle; sisters and brother-in-law Emma Larsen of Port Townsend and Patricia and John Cox of Sequim; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces.
Memorial contributions may be sent to Memorial Gift Fund, Grace Lutheran Church or a charity of choice.

Edward V. Stiles
No service has been reported for Sequim resident Edward V. Stiles, who died July 23, 2008, at the age of 43 of heart failure.
He was born May 5, 1965, in Moses Lake to William Jerry and Lorena Dee Mitchell.
He served in the United States Army and was given a medical discharge in 1983. He lived in Tacoma and Sequim where he worked as a woodworker and enjoyed fishing and doing handyman jobs in his spare time.
He is survived by his parents William Stiles and Lorena D. Stiles of Sequim; son Kyle Burleson of Tacoma; fiancee Kate O’Dell of Sequim; brothers Robert and David Stiles, both of Tacoma, and a cousin in Sequim.

Muriel S. Urban
A memorial service has been held for Sequim resident Muriel S. Urban, who died July 30, 2008, at the age of 80.
She was born March 25, 1928, in Grandview to Clarence Paul and Clara Emma Clutterham Seely.
She married Victor Urban on Aug. 29, 1951, in Spokane. He preceded her in death. A retired nurse, Mrs. Urban held a bachelor’s degree from Deaconess School of Nursing in Spokane.
She loved to paint, volunteer at church and do mission work. She loved life, her children and grandchildren, and serving others. She was a member of Sequim Community Church.
She is survived by her son Scott Urban of Vestal, N.Y.; daughter Sheri Sohn, Colorado Springs, Colo.; brother and sister-in-law Arthur and Carolyn Seely; sister Ruth Crum; and five grandchildren.

Raymond Ely Culp
No service was reported for Sequim resident Raymond Ely Culp, who died July 25, 2008, at the age of 93.
He was born May 8, 1915, in Rainy River, Ont., Canada, to Freeman Ely and Irene Beer-
wert Culp.
He served as a staff sergeant in the United States Air Force from 1942-1945 during World War II. He married Dorothy Jean Hoffman on July 17, 1944, in Gainesville, Fla. She preceded him in death on April 6, 2006.
Mr. Culp was a commercial fisherman in Alaska, owned a crab cannery in Florida, managed a cement plant in Indiana and finished many slabs and sidewalks in Sequim. An outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, crabbing with his wife and family, and winters spent with Texas friends.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Larry and Val Culp of Sequim; daughter and son-in-law Jeanie and Lance Smith of Port Angeles; two grandsons; and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by brothers Carl and Dilmon Culp and sister Ione Coen.
Bert Samuel
‘Pete’ Bates
At his request, no service will be held for Port Angeles resident Bert Samuel "Pete" Bates, who died July 27, 2008, at the age of 84 of congestive heart failure.
He was born Feb. 21, 1924, in McArthur, Ohio, to Bert Samuel and Florence Austin Bates.
He married Shirley Palmer on April 18, 1988, in Carson City, Nev. He had earlier married Helen Mary Cordaro, who preceded him in death on Feb. 5, 1976.
He joined the United States Navy in 1941 and served in the submarine service from 1942-71. His service included World War II Combat-6 war patrols in the Pacific area. He was awarded and received two Silver Stars and a submarine combat pin with four stars and commendations. A lifelong submariner, he served on 11 submarines and was chief of the boats on the USS Sablefish and USS John Adams. He was stationed in Groton, Conn., Portsmouth, N.H., and Key West, Fla.
Mr. Bates enjoyed watercrafts, hunting, fishing and gardening. He was a devoted father and husband. He was a member of Elks BPOE Lodge 466, Fleet Reserve Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars and USS Submarine Veterans WWII.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Palmer Bates of Port Angeles, and daughter Sandra Bates Hinck of Orinda, Calif.

Shirley A. Livermore
A service has been held for Sequim resident Shirley A. Livermore, who died July 27, 2008, at the age of 77.
She was born Sept. 28, 1930, in Montesano to Iris Pettett and Zarrah Irene Brooks Marshall.
A retired federal employee, she also worked for Marriott Food Services, which contracted with the local school district.
She is survived by her daughters Cheri Eckstein of Vancouver, Wash., and Merrie Brooks of Sequim; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Reva Muriel Warner
No services were reported for Sequim resident Reva Muriel Warner, who died July 27, 2008, at the age of 96 of pneumonia.
She was born Oct. 1, 1911, in Green City, Mo., to Luther and Anna Scott Martin.
The eldest of 12 children, she was the last survivor.
She moved to Colorado as a child, where she graduated as valedictorian from Pinion High School in Pinion, Colo., a one-room schoolhouse with a graduating class of five.
She married Carl Amos Warner on Aug. 29, 1931, in Pueblo, Colo. He preceded her in death on Sept. 3, 1983. After their marriage, she lived in Pueblo, Colo., for more than 50 years. She moved to Port Angeles in 1993 to be near her son Dale.
Mrs. Warner worked for 30 years as a seamstress. Before that, she worked as a doctor’s receptionist, a telephone operator and with her husband she owned a nightclub during World War II.
She loved traveling and dancing with her husband in the 48 contiguous states, Mexico and Canada. After her husband’s death, she visited Alaska and Hawaii. She enjoyed reading and spending time with her family. After the loss of her vision, she listened to hundreds of books on tape. Her large extended family was always a main focus of her life.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Dale and Carol Warner of Port Angeles; daughter and son-in-law Carla and Gary Krueger of Mesa, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law; two sisters-in-law; and many nephews and nieces.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters-in-law Wilbern and Julia Martin, Lynn and Eva Martin, Clifton and Faye Martin, Perry and Florence Martin, Donald and Marie Martin, Robert and Carol Martin, Glenn and Henrietta Martin, and Karl and Wilma Martin; and sisters and brothers-in-law Mildred and Harold Thurman, Doris and James Tully, and Marjorie and John Morgan.
