With one first place, a pair of seconds and a new personal best throw of 201 feet 10 inches, Alex Barry — a 2015 Sequim High graduate — now ranks 19th among Division II javelin throwers and the second-best freshman mark nationally.
At the Emilie Mondor Invitational at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia on April 9, Barry won his first meet with a 195-1 mark.
On April 23, Barry placed first among college athletes and second (behind an unattached competitor) with a 188-6 mark at the windy Spike Arlt Invitational at Central Washington University in Ellensburg.
A week later, Barry held a lead until the last round before placing second behind national USATF junior champion Cole Sunkel by two inches. Still, Barry threw a personal best (201-10).
The Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championship is May 13-14 at Western Oregon University in Monmouth, Ore. If he qualifies, Barry competes at the NCAA Division national Championship, set for May 26-28 in Bradenton, Fla.
