‘Art of the Pie’ at Nash’s; Brown joins First Federal; Dockside moves to winter hours; learn tools for business start-ups; Make a jet at The Home Depot; First Fed honored

‘Art of the Pie’ at Nash’s

Kate McDermott of “Art of the Pie” presents a pie-making demonstration at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, at Nash’s Farm Store, 4681 Sequim-Dungeness Way in Dungeness. McDermott will show participants how to make a pie using local pork sausage and apples. The presentation is free and open to the public.

McDermott travels the country and the world giving classes on pie-making. She has been featured in the New York Times, USA Today, Seattle Magazine, Washington Post and KING 5 TV, among others.

This year she is authoring a cookbook entitled “Art of the Pie: A Down to Earth, Homemade, Practical Guide to Artisan Pie Making and Life” (The Countryman Press/W.W. Norton). It will be published in the fall of 2016.


Brown joins First Federal

First Federal announced last week that Derek Brown has joined the senior management team as director of human resources. Brown’s primary responsibilities with First Federal will include the management and direction of the bank’s human resource activities, development and monitoring of lines of business including commercial, mortgage and consumer lending, commercial and consumer deposit products and services, non-deposit investment product sales and the business units supporting those lines of business in an equitable manner.

He is an experienced HR professional, with 20 years of HR work supporting Fortune 500 companies.


Dockside moves to winter hours

The Dockside Grill at John Wayne Marina, 2577 West Sequim Bay Road, Sequim, will have new winter hours beginning Nov. 1. Lunch is from 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m. and dinner is from 4-8 p.m. For more information, call 683-7510.


Learn tools for business start-ups

The Clallam County Economic Development Corporation is sponsoring a seminar on “Tools for Entrepreneurs” from 4-5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, in the conference room of Building J, at Peninsula College, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles.

The purpose of the class is to equip you, as a new or serial entrepreneur, with a toolset and knowledge base to effectively launch a successful start-up business.

Make a jet at The Home Depot

The Home Depot at 1145 W. Washington St. in Sequim, will host a free children’s clinic to make a Veterans Day jet from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Nov. 7.


First Fed honored

Four Washington companies, ranging from a Port Angeles bank to a Spokane business that provides IT resources for companies, have been selected as recipients of the 2015 Corporations for Communities award, which honors exceptional Washington businesses that make helping the community a priority, from the Secretary of State’s office.

First Federal in Port Angeles and Seattle-based Glassy Baby are the two winners of the large-company category. Heritage Distilling Company in Gig Harbor and Spokane-based Peddlers Pond received the small-company honors.
