All seven Sequim High School spring sports teams qualified for state postseason play. Olympic League coaches took note, bestowing some extra hardware for a number of SHS athletes.
Boys soccer
Sequim’s boys soccer team earned a reputation for having a stifling defense, posting nine shutouts this spring.
League coaches paid the squad plenty of respect in May, naming all four Wolves defenders and goalkeeper to the all-league squad and nine players overall.
Sequim coach Dave Brasher, who helped lead the team to a 13-4-1 finish, the league 2A crown and the team’s second state tournament berth in school history, took home 2A Coach of the Year honors.
Defenders Austin Sanford and Jose Najera joined midfielder Zane Carey, a junior, on the all-league first team. Sanford and Najera, both seniors, spearheaded a defense that recorded seven consecutive shutouts leading up to the state tourney – including a 1-0 blanking of Washington at the district tournament – and allowed just 15 goals all season, a 0.83 goals-per-game average.
Senior goalkeeper Matt Bedinger was named to the all-league second team along with junior defender Jordy Shearer and senior forward David LaBeaume, who led the Wolves with eight goals.
All-league honorable mention honors went to senior defender Bryan Little, sophomore forward Nick Camporini (five goals in 2009) and freshman midfielder Evan Watkins (four scores).
Fastpitch
Nothing soft about these softball players.
Sequim’s 2009 fastpitch squad not only qualified for state, but got some hardware to go with it, seeing six players earn All-Olympic League status this May.
Maddy Zbaraschuk, Sequim’s slugging sophomore catcher, led a trio of first-team players. Last year Zbaraschuk was named all-league honorable mention.
Sophomore Lea Hopson, who mashed a key home run in a district contest against Fife on Friday night, was named first-team infielder, her second all-league honor in as many years, while senior Kathryn Roeber earned first-team outfielder honors.
Junior Chelsie Winfield was named to the all-league second team as infield/utility player, while sophomore infielder Cindy Miller and freshman pitcher Demiree Briones were named all-league honorable mentions.
Baseball
Good sports and good at the sport.
Four members of
Sequim High’s 2009 baseball squad were named to the All-Olympic League team in late May, a day before playing in the Wolves’ first state tournament appearance in 12 years.
Second baseman Isaac Yamamoto, a sophomore, was named to the all-league first team after batting .327, hitting three doubles and a triple, stealing 10 bases and leading the team in both walks (17) and on-base percentage (.480).
Earning honorable mentions were senior outfielder Jason Baker (team-high .391 batting average, 18 RBIs, five doubles, nine steals), junior pitcher Alex Gillis (4-2, 4.65 ERA, team-high 53 strikeouts) and sophomore outfielder Drew Rickerson (.356 batting average, 18 RBIs, team-high 23 runs, 26 hits and 17 steals in 17 attempts).
Olympic League coaches also selected Sequim for the 2009 Sportsmanship Award.
