It has all the makings of a classic good mystery — strangers stranded in a mansion on a remote isle … on a dark and stormy night.

Sequim High School’s newest play, however, has other touches to spice it up, including 10 tiny soldiers that are sitting on the mansion’s fireplace mantle and begin falling off “one by one, and then there were none.”

For this year’s senior class play, the students are performing “And Then There Were None,” based on the detective fiction novel by famed 20th century author Agatha Christie.

Nearly two dozen cast members fill the roles of the 10 guests and employees — director Christy Rutherford decided to double-cast several characters so the different actors can put their own spin on the individuals and bring their own touch to the performances.

The production begins as 10 guests are invited to a stunning mansion on a remote island off Great Britain. Each has a secret, and none are acquainted with the others or the mysterious Mr. U.N. Owen, their unseen host who never appears but accuses each of the guests of murder.

As the group sips after-dinner drinks, they begin to die, one by one, and the boatman who brought them to the island fails to show up to take them home.

The characters are as colorful as the mystery: the nervous housekeeper, the elderly spinster and, of course, the elusive Mr. Owen.

Christie’s novel, “And Then There Were None,” is said to be not only her best-selling work but also the best-selling mystery in the world.

“The kids have been working hard,” Rutherford said. “I think people will enjoy this play.”
