Attempted child kidnapping remains under investigation

Sequim Police continue to investigate an alleged child abduction near Margaret Kirner Park on Aug. 3.

Sequim Police continue to investigate an alleged child abduction near Margaret Kirner Park on Aug. 3.

Social media posts from the 10-year-old Sequim boy’s mother say that a man wearing a black mask driving a van possibly with purple rims attempted to take the boy at knife point.

Police Chief Bill Dickinson said conflicting reports from neighbors and witnesses “continue to deepen the confusion for us.”

Dickinson said police received a 9-1-1 call around 7:50 p.m. Monday night from a neighbor who saw the child crying.

Dickinson said while there’s no solid evidence of the event occurring he’s convinced something happened to cause the child to be upset.

“I don’t think we have a scary man wearing a mask running around trying to abduct children,” he said. “If we did, I’d be the first one on top of the rooftops shouting it out.”

Dickinson said they’ll continue to treat the event as if it happened though.

Deputy Chief Sheri Crain said on Tuesday they are pursuing every lead and hunting down every investigative possibility such as looking for cameras that may identify the driver.

“If people still have information that is pertinent, we want to know about it,” she said.

Crain declined to comment on the situational details of the investigation.
