P.A. youth wins ‘Voters’ art contest
Talia Anderson, a fifth-grade student at Dry Creek Elementary School in Port Angeles, won the Washington state Voters’ Pamphlet Art Contest. Anderson’s artwork will be featured in more than 3.2 million copies of the statewide Voters’ Pamphlet, which will be sent to all Washington households prior to this fall’s General Election in November. On May 27, Secretary of State Kim Wyman appeared at an assembly at Dry Creek Elementary School to make a surprise announcement about Anderson’s honor.
About 300 students across the state submitted entries. After the state elections division staff selected about 20 finalists, Wyman chose Anderson‘s entry as the contest winner.
“I loved so many of the entries because they were colorful, well drawn and creative,” Wyman said. “It was really tough to choose one, but Talia‘s artwork was the best.”

Volunteer receives symphony award
The board of directors of the Port Angeles Symphony has awarded the 2014 Biz Gehrke Award to LaNice Korus.
In 1984, the board established the annual Biz Gehrke Award to honor a person (or persons) each year who made an outstanding contribution to the symphony.
Korus established the Symphony Guild. She visualized, organized and worked hard toward the success of numerous fundraisers for the orchestra. She is very dedicated to the symphony and has been a guiding force for its volunteers.
