Adversity rarely shows up in the win column.

So it is with the 2007-08 women Pirates, who struggled to overcome setbacks to key players early on and still managed to post a 7-9 conference mark and take sixth place in the 10-team NWAACC North Divison.

Peninsula capped the season with a 65-49 win at Edmonds Saturday night, handing the Tritons a perfect record of their own – zero wins in 25 conference and nonconference games.

Brittany Bridges led the Pirates with 20 points and nine rebounds while fellow freshmen Sam Flett and Britney Yamane saw their first collegiate seasons end in style: Flett had 14 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals while Yamane added 10 points, five rebounds and six assists.

Starting in their final games as Pirates, sophomores Bethany Holt and Brianna Allen finished 2007-08 with solid games. Holt had five rebounds and three steals before fouling out and Allen chipped in seven points.

The Pirates led 33-26 at halftime and built a 17-point lead midway through the second half. Peninsula held Edmonds to paltry 24-percent shooting in the second half and outrebounded the Tritons 41-34.

Alexa Breidenback led Edmonds with 24 points.

Peninsula was without the services of recruits Ayla Brown and Damarais Craig thanks to preseason injuries, and lost others for spells during the regular season.

Pirates challenge, but

lose in home finale

Some Goliaths don’t fall.

The Everett Trojans – behind 6-foot-3 post Bryna Trescott – got all they could handle Feb. 20 but prevailed in an 82-72 win at Peninsula College.

Trescott went for 22 points and 16 rebounds as the North Division-champion Trojans avoided the upset-minded Pirates.

A back-and-forth affair for much of the first half, Everett took a 38-36 lead into the locker room at halftime. Peninsula kept it close as late as three minutes on the clock before Trescott’s interior offense helped Everett pull away.

Brittany Bridges led Peninsula with 20 points, six rebounds and four assists, and teammate Sam Flett had another big night with 19 points, five boards, nine assists and five steals. P.C.’s Britney Yamane chipped in 14 points and six rebounds while sophomore Bethany Holt had eight points and four steals in her final home game as a Pirate. Peninsula’s other sophomore, Brianna Allen, chipped in with five points and three assists.

They simply ran out of time.

Needing a winning streak and a lot of help from other NWACC North teams in front of them, the Pirates were eliminated from conference tournament consideration after a heartbreaking 73-69 loss to Whatcom CC Feb. 18.

Peninsula led 38-33 at halftime in a game that saw the lead change hands 12 times and the score tied 15 times.

The Pirates led 63-60 until a Whatcom three-pointer with three seconds left tied the game.

The Orcas then outscored Peninsula 10-6 in the extra frame to win the contest and edge ahead Peninsula for fifth place in the division.

The Pirates had four players in double figures, led by Flett’s 25 points and eight assists. Bridges had 12 points and seven rebounds and Yamane had a solid all-around game with 11 points and five assists.

Pirate Krystal Tolliver, playing with a knee injury, had 10 points, seven rebounds and two steals.

Stephanie Gair and Trisha Mallahan led Whatcom with 17 points apiece.

Season notes:

Flett led the Pirates in scoring (13.8 points per game) and assists (91) … Bridges led Peninsula in rebounds (6.9 per game) while Holt led her squad in steals (80) and blocks (32) … Peninsula finished in the top 10 in the 35-team NWAACC in several statistic categories, including steals (fourth), free throw percentage (seventh), second-effort points (ninth) and assists (10th) … the Pirates are 19-29 in the past three years in conference play. After posting a 4-12 mark in 2005-06, P.C. improved to 8-8 last season and 13-12 overall.
