Olympic Mountains skiing, climbing is topic of college presentation

Peninsula College opens its 2014 winter programming with a presentation on “Climbing and Skiing in the Olympic Mountains” by Tyler Reid of Pacific Alpine guides on Jan. 4.

Reid’s multimedia presentation begins at 12:35 p.m. in the college’s Little Theater, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.

Reid is a native of the Olympic Peninsula and has an extensive background in the mountains. Born in New Zealand, he spent his first year living on a sailboat. He grew up in Port Townsend and started backcountry skiing in the Olympic Mountains when he was 13. He has guided in the Northwest, Colorado, Alaska and internationally.

Pacific Alpine is a small guide service based on the Olympic Peninsula that Reid manages with his wife, Kathy. It offers guided and instructional programs in the Olympic Mountains, Mount Baker, North Cascades, Canada and Alaska.

In addition, Reid works with three other guide services, including RMI, one of the largest in the United States, where he guides ascents of Mount Rainier, winter programs and climbs in the North Cascades.

Reid also works with San Juan Mountain Guides, where he teaches AIARE avalanche courses and guides backcountry skiing in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado, and with Wild Alpine, where he guides ski plane-assisted ski mountaineering trips and climbing expeditions in the Alaska Range and Wrangell St-Elias National Park.
