balance the books?
North Olympic Library System’s board of trustees will hold a second public meeting before adopting its 2010 operating budget. The meeting is at 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St.
The district faces a $176,000 shortfall due primarily to the cumulative effect of the 1-percent maximum annual allowable increase in the NOLS property tax levy and the average 2.8-percent inflation for the past eight years.
Cutbacks under discussion include service reductions, unpaid employee furloughs, temporary benefits rollbacks and layoffs. The board is considering asking for a levy increase in 2010.

VFW turkey feast
The Veterans of Foreign Wars will host its annual complimentary Thanksgiving meal with all the trimmings from 1-4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 26, at 169 E. Washington St., Sequim.
The meal is open to everyone, but the VFW will appreciate knowing how many people plan to attend and how many guests they will bring by calling 683-9546.
Screening clinic offered
A Shrine Children’s Screening Clinic will be held from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 28, at the Masonic Hall, 700 S. Fifth Ave., Sequim.
Free medical care will be provided at one of the Shrine Hospitals for Children to children up to the age of 18 requiring medical and rehabilitative services.
Congenital deformities, burn care, cleft lips and palates are treated. Transportation and parents’ lodging are provided.

Gardiner bazaar
Gardiner’s holiday craft fair runs from 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, at the Gardiner Community Center, 980 Old Gardiner Road. Fifteen vendors will have gifts from beach glass ornaments to carved wood pens and birds.
Holiday bazaar
Faith Lutheran Preschool will hold its holiday bazaar from 8:45 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, at the church, 4061/2 W. Cedar St., Sequim. They also will present a live Nativity scene – allowing donors of $10 to don costumes and be photographed – from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Animals for the Nativity come from Pure Country, a 4-H club. The bazaar includes baked goods and handcrafted items, plus a silent auction and a hot dog lunch. All funds raised will be matched by a grant. Proceeds go to the Faith Lutheran preschool program.
