Wrestlers hope to raise ‘pounds’ of food

Consider this a new, more

charitable way to "make weight."

Sequim High School’s wrestling squads are hoping to collect food donations for the Sequim Food Bank, challenging each other and the community to come up with at least the total weight of varsity and junior varsity squads, about 2,200 pounds.

The food-raiser, dubbed "Pound for Pound: We Are Worth Our Weight in Food," is set for noon-6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, at the Sequim Safeway, 680 W. Washington St.

Wrestlers from both teams are slated to be on hand to weigh donations and pass out information about the team, including details of the Rainshadow Tournament invitational in January.

The team is asking for donations along with household and/or personal items; dollar donations are counted as one pound.

Club seeks volleyball coaches

The Peninsula Volleyball Club is looking for coaches for the 2008-2009 season.

The club’s goal is to develop talent for girls ages ranging from middle school to high school, from Neah Bay to Port Townsend; to provide quality competitive playing experience for those athletes; and to promote good sportsmanship and citizenship in order to raise the level of volleyball play on the peninsula.

Tryouts are tentatively set for 2 p.m., Dec. 7 at Port Angeles High School. The number of coaches needed, compensation for those coaches and the age groups involved will depend on the number of players who attend tryouts.

The club, which belongs to the USA Volleyball Puget Sound Region, continues this year under new leadership from Port Angeles High School head volleyball coach Christine Halberg, who is transitioning into the director position while working with current club director Jennifer Zbaraschuk.

For more information about club, tryouts or if you’re interested in coaching a club team, contact coach Halberg at 504-2654.
