Sequim residents are gathering support for one of their own, Aaron McElhose.

McElhose was critically injured Aug. 10 after being thrown from a vehicle while on vacation in Eastern Washington, where he still is receiving medical treatment. His wife is often on the other side of the state to be with him, which is why Sequim residents and businesses have organized fundraising events to help the family while neither of the couple is working regularly.

McElhose’s friends recently organized a golf tournament for Oct. 11 at The Cedars at Dungeness. All proceeds will go to the family. The cost is $90 per person, which includes 18 holes of golf and carts in a four-man-scramble format tournament.

Organizer Darren Stephens said payments can be made the morning of the tournament, which begins at 9 a.m. Those with additional questions can contact Stephens at 460-8735 or deestar@olypen.com.

The Scramble for Aaron tournament marks the second golf event to aid the family. The Mike Beary Memorial Children’s Fund board presented the family with a check for $500, which came from a tournament, for back-to-school shopping for the McElhoses’ twin children.

Friends of McElhose report that he is no longer in a chemically induced coma, as was the case shortly after the accident due to a cranial injury, and that his doctors are reporting some progress.

Once they are sure of his ability to travel, doctors will allow McElhose to be transferred to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, although no time table has been set.
