Olympic upends Peninsula women

On Saturday night, the Olympic Rangers had barely enough bodies on the court to begin the game.

In the end, the only numbers that mattered were on the scoreboard — and all in Olympic’s favor.

The six-person team found a way to win against visiting Peninsula Jan. 12, outlasting the Pirates 75-64.

Megan Gilbert scored a game-high 24 points and Patricia Lewis had 19 points and 14 rebounds — in all 40 minutes of play — to push the Rangers (2-2, 5-9) past Peninsula (1-2, 5-7).

Brittany Bridges and Sam Flett gave the Pirates their best hopes, as Bridges had a solid 15-point, 14-rebound performance and Flett chipped in with 11 points, 14 rebounds and five assists. In fact, Peninsula had as many rebounds on the Ranger’s backboard as the Rangers themselves (24).

But Peninsula simply couldn’t find the net often enough, shooting 26-of-69 (38-percent) from the field and a dreadful 2-of-19 from the three-point line. Add 12 missed free throws in 22 attempts, and it added up to Peninsula’s second NWAACC loss in as many games.

Bethany Holt had six points and five steals in the loss.

Lewis and Olympic teammates Ariel McDermott (nine assists) and Coty Ettl (22 points, six three-pointers) each played all 40 minutes of the game.

Bellevue sinks Pirates in P.A.

Not much was going right even before Kathleen Wilson took a hit and went down in the second half of Peninsula’s match-up with Bellevue Jan. 9.

Darling, Peninsula’s coach, made sure the referees knew all about it.

Wilson, the Pirates’ leading scorer at 16 points per game, scored just six points before taking a spill midway through the second half of the Pirates’ 66-35 home loss to the Bulldogs last week, prompting an outburst from Darling that earned her a technical foul.

Already down 20 points, the Pirates found no second wind from losing their top shooter as they finished the night shooting just under 22-percent from the field and turning the ball over 19 times.

Flett was the only Pirate in double figures with 10 points, while Bridges added five rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Bellevue opened the game with a 36-19 first half and saw their lead swell to 35 points late in the game.

Briana Lewis led the Bulldogs with 19 points as the taller visitors out-rebounded Peninsula 45-29.
