It may be early, but these Pirates look in midseason form.

Peninsula (7-0-1) earned a pair of shutout wins last week, crushing the South Puget Sound Clippers 10-0 on Sept. 11 and whitewashing Southwest Oregon 4-0 on Saturday.

On the road against South Puget Sound, P.C. raced to an 8-0 lead by halftime, getting two scores each from Ash Apollon, Alex Martinez and Christian Martinez, and scores from Victor Sanchez and Kassio Monteiro.

Steven Rodriguez and Erick Urzua added scores after halftime.

Christian Martinez and Urzua each contributed two assists.

Sophomore keeper Angel Guerra recorded his first shutout of the season, earning five saves.

“It was nice to get the shutout,” coach Andrew Chapman said, praising his defense and the outstanding play of Guerra.

Against Southwest Oregon, the Pirates broke a 33-minute stalemate with four scores in a six-minute span and that’s more than they needed. Apollon, Urzua, Kalei Gallarde and Christian Martinez each had scores.

Guerra needed just one save as the Pirates kept the ball on the offensive end, tallying 34 shots on goal.

"We had a hard time finding the back of the net," Chapman said. "Our guys did really well keeping the pressure on all game and getting shots off but unfortunately they just weren’t really going in. We did get everybody, in which is always a plus."

Peninsula was slated to take on North Idaho College on Sept. 17 — results were not available at press time. The Pirates host Pierce College on Sept. 21 and play at Tacoma on Sept. 25.
