Each Sequim swimmer earned at least one personal best in an Olympic League meet against Olympic’s Trojans on Jan. 21 in Port Angeles.
Olympic won the meet 119-53, with Sequim earning one first-place finish and six second-place marks. Also competing were Klahowya and Port Angles in a four-team dual meet.
David Calderon and Christian Goodrich set personal bests and finished second and third in a five-man 100 backstroke race; Calderon finished in 1:16.63, a six-second improvement, and Goodrich finished in 1:17.66, a half-second improvement.
Sequim’s 400 free relay team of Calderon, Goodrich, Brandon Grown and Wendall Lorenzen shed 14 seconds off their previous best and each swam their best 100-yard leg of the season.
“It was great to see such motivation and focus at the end of the meet,” Sequim coach Linda Moats said.
Sequim divers Mathew Craig and Brendon Jack took first and second with no Olympic divers to compete with, though they did dive with their counterparts from Port Angeles. Craig scored 164.4 points while Jack scored 139.75 points in his first official Sequim competitions.
Goodrich placed second in the four-man 100 freestyle race with a 1:03.81.
Calderon improved his 50 free mark by two seconds, to 30.62.
“He’s such a smooth swimmer; I expect big things from him in the future,” Moats said of Calderon.
Grow dropped six seconds off his previous best in the 200 freestyle with a 2:39.93 mark.
Moats said she was impressed with Lorenzen and Liam Payne in the 200 individual medley. Lorenzen placed third with a 2:49.48, a three-second improvement, while Payne dropped seven seconds off his previous 200 IM best set last week.
Moats said she also was impressed with Alex Berikoff in the 500 free.
“The distance events are usually daunting for new swimmers on the team, but Alex handled it well,” Moats said.
Ross Burchell (50 and 500 free), Haakon Meyer (100 butterfly, 100 backstroke), Ziven Meyer (100 and 200 free) and Tiernann Shelton (100 breaststroke, 200 IM) had two wins apiece for Olympic.
The Sequim-Olympic match was a make-up for a meet that was canceled in December.
