CONTEST: Seeking Sequim’s messiest desk at home/work

January is Get Organized Month. The Declutter Lady and the Sequim Gazette are looking for Sequim’s messiest desk, seeking to help the overwhelmed owner keep that New Year’s Resolution to “finally” get organized.

Paper is by far the most common — and stressful — clutter that people have to handle. We hesitate to throw away or shred because we are afraid we might need that item again. And yet, we are unable to put our hands on the important papers we need because we don’t know where they are! Many desks are no more than a place to stash stuff that we just aren’t sure about.

According to various studies, nearly one week of work time per person is lost annually as a result of searching for misplaced office items, e-mails and files. Sequim’s Messiest Desk Contest winner will have his or her desk at work or at home transformed in order to begin a more productive and organized 2013.

The contest begins Jan. 16 and is open to residents and business owners in the greater Sequim area — west of Discovery Bay and east of the S-curves into Port Angeles.

Those interested in entering are required to submit a photo of their “desk disaster” for a chance to win:

• A one-hour assessment with The Declutter Lady ($75 value).

• Enrollment in the upcoming “Managing Paper Clutter” class series in March ($125 value).

• Two hours of “hands-on” help to declutter and organize your desk ($150 value).

• A variety of organizing tools to be determined.

• Two runners-up will each receive one-hour assessments from The Declutter Lady.

Entries must be submitted by Feb. 6. Readers of the Gazette will be asked to help pick the winner. (For complete contest rules and details, please see the sidebar story.)

Managing paper clutter is important whether you are running a business or just trying to keep up with life. Every minute spent searching for a piece of paper costs time and money. By setting up systems that are tailored to you as an individual, you can lower stress and increase productivity.
