As one festival is set to begin, another looks to build some hype, too.
Organizers with the Olympic Peninsula Air Affaire, set for Aug. 29-30 at Sequim Valley Airport, are opening up registration for balloon rides before and during the event.
Captain Crystal Stout of Morning Star Balloon Co. said they seek RSVPs this year to help support more balloons for the event’s third year. Six balloonists are scheduled to come this year.
“We can’t oversell,” Stout said. “We’ll fly balloons the whole week before.”
As a kick-off, Stout plans to set up her balloon basket to roast marshmallows for s’mores during the Sequim Irrigation Festival’s Family Fun Day from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, May 2, on Washington Street between Sequim Avenue and Second Avenue as a kick-off for balloon ride sign-ups.
Last year, she said they handed out about 600 s’mores.
Air Affaire co-organizer Emily Westcott said they typically hold the Air Affaire during Labor Day weekend but moved it up to run before school starts. Last year, she said about 5,000 people visited the event.
“It was bigger and the weather was nicer than the year before,” Westcott said.
This year, they’ll continue offering wing walkers, skydivers, a car show, remote control planes, Swift planes, Aviation Dreams’ ageless flights, tethered balloon rides, live music and more.
Stout said balloon sponsorships are available and that they seek home stays for visiting balloon pilots.
Visiting the Air Affaire each day remains at $5 a carload. Costs for balloon rides and other paid services can be found online at olympicpeninsulaairaffaire.com and/or by contacting Stout at 601-2433 or airboss@nwplace.com.
