For Sequim’s girls’ track and field squad, the future is now.

Senior Samantha Whiteside and freshman Haleigh Harrison each took first place in three events as the Wolves slipped past Port Angeles 84-81 in a three-way Olympic League meet April 15 in Port Angeles.

Harrison’s efforts included a school record-setting 5-foot 3-inch high jump effort, topping Lauryn Garrett’s benchmark from a season ago.

She’s also just a few inches from the school’s all-time triple jump mark, snagging first in the event (32-8) on her final jump.

Sequim’s upperclassmen led the way this day, however, as Whiteside led the charge. She took first in the 100- and 200-meter sprints, and then topped the field with a 10-0 mark in the pole vault.

Despite battling an illness, reigning state shot put champion Anna LaBeaume, a senior, managed first place in her top event with a 34-foot 10-inch throw, then took first in the discus (89-4). She also placed second in both 100- and 200-meter sprints behind Whiteside.

Junior Audrey Lichten took top honors in both 1600 and 3200 distance races while senior Allison Cutting topped the field in the 800.

Sequim’s relay squad of Chase O’Neil, Lauren Bell, Nicole Pino and Jasmine McMullin took top honors in both 4×100 and 4×200 races.

On the boys’ side, Olympic’s Trojans bullied the Port Angeles and Sequim boys for top honors. Led by runner John Wojtech and thrower Larry Dixon, the Trojans scored 72 team points, ahead of P.A. (66) and Sequim (43).

Wojtech took titles in the 800, 1600 and 3200 while Dixon won both shot put and discus events.

The Wolves got just one first-pace finish – sophomore Frank Catelli’s 156-foot javelin throw – but got several strong finishes across the board.

Emanuel Herrera took second and Stephan Stilts was third in the 300 hurdles, finishing a whisper behind Olympic’s Harley Dakis.

Jared Lindorfer was second in the 400-meter sprint and set a personal best 5-6 in the high jump to take fourth.

Sequim got another strong performance from freshman Jayson Brocklesby, who was third in the triple jump, fourth in the long jump and fifth in the high jump.

Alex Jenkins also racked up points for the Wolves, taking third place in both 800- and 1600-meter races.

The Wolves host Port Townsend and Klahowya on April 22. Select Sequim athletes compete at the Bellevue Invitational on April 24.

Sequim is at Kingston on April 29.

Wolves finish strong at Snohomish

Competing against more than 45 schools on both boys and girls sides, Sequim athletes racked up eight top-10 finishes at the Eason Invitational in Snohomish on Saturday.

Sequim senior Thomas Gallagher was the top finisher, placing fifth in the shot put with a throw of 49 feet 5 inches.

It’s the 10th-best mark among Washington state 2A athletes this season, according to athletic.net.

Cutting raced to a 2:24 finish in the 800-meter race, good for sixth overall. It’s the seventh-best state 2A mark this season.

With a 5:19 finish, Lichten was ninth in the metric mile at Snohomish, another top-10 state 2A mark.

Whiteside took seventh in the pole vault at 9-6 while Harrison was eighth overall in the high jump at 5 feet.

Sequim’s 4×400 relay team (Whiteside, Lichten, Cutting and O’Neil) placed seventh overall at 4 minutes, 18 seconds.
