Grange goings-on

April is Grange Month and in celebration the Sequim Prairie Grange invites the public to a potluck dinner at 6:30 p.m. today, April 22.

It is planned to be a fun evening and an opportunity for non-members to learn more and ask questions about the grange. Those attending are asked to bring a dish for the potluck.

The Grange Hall is at 290 Macleay Road, Sequim.

The Sequim Prairie Grange Flea Market and Bake Sale will be from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday April 25. There will be lots of venders and lunch is available.


Libraries to close for in-service day April 24

All libraries of the North Olympic Library System will be closed on Friday, April 24, to allow staff to attend an in-service training day. Library locations in Port Angeles, Sequim, Forks and Clallam Bay will reopen at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 25.

Geocachers plan area cleanup

Olympic Peninsula Geocachers are organizing a trash cleanup (CITO – Cache In Trash Out) to clean up several sites in and around the Sequim area. Meet outside Westside Pizza at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 25, to sign in and sign liability waivers.

Trash bags and two sizes of disposable gloves (medium and large) will be provided. Wear appropriate clothing for the weather and possible wet ground.

Cleanup continues until 11 a.m. followed by a no-host lunch at Westside Pizza. RSVP to or call with questions at 683-1329 from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday.


Earth Day in Gardiner; bird rescues seek donations

Wild Birds Unlimited, 275953 Highway 101, Gardiner, will be collecting donations for the Northwest Raptor Center and Discovery Bay Wild Birds Rescue from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, April 25, during the business’ Earth Day celebration.

More than a dozen vendor and information booths will be set up. For more information, call 797-7100.

Spring is baby bird season for the centers and the organizations are in need of supplies. They are seeking donations of aquariums (in good condition), small animal-watering bottles, baby bottles to feed fawns, powdered goat’s milk, alfalfa, chain-link fencing, paper towels, Kleenex, potty pads (human or puppy), laundry baskets, heating pads, towels, new or gently used wool blankets, vet wrap, clothespins, bleach, and other items; they also are always in need of financial donations.


Genealogy 101 class is slated for Saturday

The Clallam County Genealogy Society will offer a Genealogy 101 class from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, April 25, during the Research Center’s open house.

The monthly Saturday open house hours are noon-4 p.m. The public is invited to use the library and ask questions. A $5 donation covers materials.

The center is at 402 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles. Hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday-Friday. For more information, call 417-5000.


Planning your legacy

The Dungeness River Audubon Center hosts a financial planning seminar from 4-5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 30, at the center, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road, Sequim.

Insurance agent/owner Phil Castell will cover income, health and retirement planning; asset protection; planning your final wishes; and charitable gifting.

EAA to meet

The EAA 430 Experimental Aircraft Association will  meet at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 25, in Hangar 15 at Sequim Valley Airport.

Sid Smith is the featured speaker and he will present a program on CorrosionX and its installation for metal airplanes.

 

Pack up your ‘poo’

Just in time for Earth Day, the nonprofit Native Horsemanship Riding Center, 396 Taylor Cutoff Road, Sequim, is introducing well-composted “Pony Poo.” The product regularly sells for $4 per 50-pound bag or $2 if you fill the bag yourself.

Stop by from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, April 25, and get a free bag when you buy two.

Spring plant sale set

The Sequim Prairie Garden Club will hold its annual spring plant sale from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, April 25 at Pioneer Memorial Park, 387 E. Washington St.

There will be a huge selection of tomatoes, vegetable starts, perennials, annuals, shrubs, trees, garden art, baked goods, raffles and more. Come early for best selection.

Learn about geocaching

The Port Angeles Library will present a hands-on introduction to the adventures of geocaching with expert Caroline Stuckey from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, April 25.

This beginner’s workshop will include an overview of geocaching, guidance using a hand-held global positioning system (GPS) device and an outdoor field trip to practice searching for caches. Adult and teen participants are encouraged to bring their own GPS device and a brown bag lunch.

Trinity monthly dinner set

A free community dinner will be served at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 30, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave.

The meal includes pork roast with apples and onions, rice, coleslaw, desserts and beverages. Reservations, which are requested to ensure that enough food is prepared, may be made by phoning the church at 683-5367 between 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on the Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday before the dinner or by e-mail to dinners@sequimtumc.org.

The church presents the dinners on the last Thursday of each month.


PEO plans bunco fundraiser

Chapter IV PEO will host a bunco and silent auction fundraiser at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 510 E. Park Ave., Port Angeles, at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, April 30. A $10 donation to participate is requested.

ONP seeks volunteers for marmot monitoring

Olympic National Park is accepting volunteer applications for the Olympic Marmot Monitoring Program 2015 survey season.

All volunteers are required to participate in a one-day training that includes both classroom and field instruction.

The application deadline is May 1, but may close earlier if enough eligible volunteers have been accepted or last longer if some trips remain unfilled.
