With the culmination of another prep year, it’s time to look at where some former Sequim High School athletes have managed to continue their athletic endeavors.
Out of the 2009 graduating class, we already know Ary Webb has plans to shoot hoops for Olympic College in Bremerton while Joe Hutchison and Ethan Hinton are headed to Southern Oregon University to wrestle for the NAIA Raiders.
This spring saw a number of Sequim grads hitting the fields/track/courts.
Yolanda Chinn dusts the diamonds for Lower Columbia Community College. Chinn finished the season hitting .237 with two doubles, one home run and nine RBIs as a freshman. The Red Devils went 2-2 at the NWAACC tournament, ending their string of three consecutive titles.
Ben Grubb slugs fastballs for Lower Columbia’s highly ranked baseball squad. The red-shirt freshman tied for seventh in the NWAACC with five home runs and finished the season with a team-high .622 slugging percentage, four triples and 15 extra-base hits. He batted .327 in 98 at-bats for the 35-6 squad.
Stephanie Marcy, now a sophomore at Stanford University (Div. I) was named an honorable mention on the Pac-10 All-Academic team. Marcy, a middle distance runner, took fourth place in the women’s 10,000-meter run (35:20) at the Pac-10 Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore.
Kincaid Nichols is a sprinter and jumper at Central Washington University, a Division II school.
During the indoor season in January-March, Nichols recorded the team’s third-best marks in the 60- and 200-meter dash times and fourth-best long jump mark.
Cory Parrish runs for the Linfield Wildcats’ Division III track squad. Parrish recorded Linfield’s fourth-best 400-meter dash time (50.85) on April 24 at the NWC Championship meet. He also has the school’s fifth-best 800-meter time of 2:03.91.
Justine Textor and the University of Idaho (Div. I) recently completed a strong spring tennis season, as the Vandals topped their 2008 win total with 20 victories.
Chad Wagner pitches for the Sea Warriors at Hawaii-Pacific University’s baseball squad (Div. II). Wagner, a junior, finished the 2009 spring season with a 3-6 record and 7.77 earned-run average, striking out 25 batters in 10 starts.
