First Step Family Support Center has been awarded a $19,400 grant from USDA Rural Development. State director Jon DeVaney presented the grant to the center Sept. 24. The grant will help the center purchase equipment for a child care facility.

First Step Family Support Center was awarded the grant as part of USDA Rural Development’s Community Facility Daycare Initiative to construct a new building to meet the growing needs of low-income families living in Clallam County.

A consortium of sponsors including Olympic Community Action Programs, Jefferson County Housing Authority, Clallam County Housing Authority, Habitat for Humanity Clallam County, Habitat for Humanity East Jefferson County and Homeward Bound continues its series of classes aimed at helping first time buyers navigate the home purchase process. The program is intended to helping buyers maximize their purchasing power and will be open to low- and middle-income residents interested in home purchase. Free six-hour classes will be held through the first week of November.

Classes are scheduled from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Jefferson County Library, 620 Cedar Ave., in Port Hadlock; 6-9 p.m. Oct. 21-22 at the Port Angeles Public Library, 2210 S. Peabody St.; and

9 a.m.-3 p.m. Nov. 8 at the Tri Area Community Center, 10 West Valley Road, Chimacum.

Sequim Prairie Garden Club’s Pioneer Memorial Park recently was certified as a Backyard Wildlife Sanctuary by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife as well as an official Wildlife Habitat certification from the National Wildlife Federation. The club members, led by vice president Priscilla Hudson, worked diligently so that wildlife find quality habitat, food, water, cover and a place to raise young for the benefit and protection of Sequim’s urban wildlife.

Halina D’Urso has completed Morgan Stanley’s rigorous investment studies program in New York and has joined the firm’s Global Wealth Management Group office in Sequim as a financial advisor. D’Urso lives in Sequim and serves as the Sequim Irrigation Festival Art and Crafts Committee chairwoman. She also has been an active supporter of the Sequim Museum and Arts Center and Rotary.
