‘Hawks tailgate party on tap

US Bank, 101 W. Washington St., Sequim, will host a tailgate party from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, for area Seattle Seahawks fans. The team plays the Atlanta Falcons at CenturyLink Field beginning at 4:25 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16. The game will be broadcast on Fox Sports.

OMCF readies for gala

The Olympic Medical Center Foundation, in conjunction with the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, will present the annual Harvest of Hope Wine & Dinner Gala at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, at Sunland Golf & Country Club, 109 Hilltop Drive, Sequim. The 14th annual gala once again will raise funds for local cancer patients being treated at Olympic Medical Cancer Center through the provision of services, programs and equipment. Cocktails begin at 5:30 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6:15 p.m.

The ticket price is $135. Attendees will have an opportunity to help raise funds through the purchase of raffle tickets or live and silent auction items.

Free spay/neuter clinic set

In honor of National Feral Cat Day, Spay To Save will spay or neuter 60 cats, vaccinate and treat for fleas and ear mites at a free clinic Saturday, Oct. 15, at Airport Garden Center in Port Angeles. The clinic is subsidized by the Community Cat Coalition in Mukilteo. The coalition is an organization specializing in Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), education and mentoring for animal welfare organizations and the general public.

Vision loss fair set

The National Federation of the Blind of Clallam County hosts a free vision loss fair, set for 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, at the Port Angeles Senior Center, 328 E. Seventh St., Port Angeles. Featured exhibits include independent living with vision loss, available vision aids, mobility training, free audio book, low-cost public transportation and library services. The National Federation of the Blind is a nonprofit, volunteer organization assisting blind and visually impaired persons in acquiring the skills of independence and educating the community in recognizing their capabilities and challenges.

Coffee with mayor

The City of Sequim “Coffee with the Mayor” program continues in October. Sequim residents can meet informally with Mayor Dennis Smith at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, at the Bell Creek Bar & Grill, 707 E. Washington St. Assistant to the city manager Joe Irvin will join the mayor. The mayor will be the Bell Creek Bar & Grill each month to listen to anyone who wants to chat, ask questions, express a concern or make a comment about the city or the community.

Thrift shop open Saturday

The Sequim Dungeness Hospital Guild’s Thrift Shop, 204 W. Bell St., Sequim, will be open from ll a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15. Fall fashions for the entire family are in, complete with shoes, designer hand bags and fine jewelry and scarves to match. Lots of furniture at affordable prices, kitchen appliances and dishware also are featured. All white-tagged items will be half-price. Volunteers are needed and require only two three-hour shifts a month. Call 683-7044 for more information.

Coffee with superintendent

Sequim community members are invited to meet and have discussion with Superintendent Gary Neal at an informal coffee chat from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, at Rainshadow Coffee Roasting Company, 157 W. Cedar St. Coffee chat discussions center on current educational issues.

Initiatives in spotlight

The Clallam County League of Women Voters sponsors an open house on state initiatives frm 6-8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, in the Carver Room of the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St. The event is co-sponsored by the North Olympic Library System.

The Dungeness Valley Health & Wellness Clinic, 777 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim, is offering free blood pressure checks from 4-5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25.

Watch the razor clam intake

Washington State Department of Health issued an interim advisory last week because of potential health risks associated with eating large quantities of razor clams harvested from the Washington coast. State officials recommend people eat no more than 15 razor clams per month during a one-year period. This interim advisory applies to everyone, especially women who are pregnant or might become pregnant, nursing mothers, children, the elderly and people with compromised renal function.

P.E.O. chapters hold luncheon

Members of local P.E.O chapters will gather for a buffet luncheon at noon Saturday, Oct. 22, at 7 Cedars Casino in Blyn. Those P.E.O. members who are not affiliated with one of the 13 chapters in Port Townsend, Port Angeles and Sequim are invited to attend this annual event. The guest speaker will be Nancy Alarcon, principal lecturer for the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences at the University of Washington. She is a member of P.E.O Chapter HV of Redmond. The theme, “P.E.O. Means the World to Me,” promises to reflect a special connection between members and to focus on the P. E. O. International Peace Scholarship Fund.

OPAS talks birds, volcanos

The Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society meets at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, at the Dungeness River Audubon Center at Railroad Bridge Park, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road, Sequim. Retired USGS volcanologist Christina Heliker presents “Native Birds and Active Volcanoes on the Big Island of Hawaii.”

In her 28 years as a geologist documenting Kilauea’s eruptions, Heliker had a front row seat watching the birds of native Hawaiian forests. Become more familiar with these species found nowhere else on Earth. The program is free and open to the public.

Senior Nutrition menu set

Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4:30 p.m. at the Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St. on Tuesdays-Fridays. Suggested donation is $5 (60 and over), $8 guest and a 24-hour advance reservation is needed. RSVP to 683-8491. Menus are subject to change.
