Dry conditions spur four fires in Olympic National Park

The 10-acre Cox Valley Fire rages in Olympic National Park on Aug. 18. Heavy smoke prompted closure of Obstruction Point Road as fire activity increased last week in four Olympic National Park fires. Those fires reportedly grew with the onset of hot, dry conditions, the National Park Service said, with the Hayes Fire 20 miles south of Port Angeles enlarged to 718 acres by Aug. 20 while while the Godkin Fire 25 miles south of Port Angeles grew from 137 acres to 181 acres. The Cox Valley Fire, north of Obstruction Point Road and 12 miles south of Port Angeles, stayed at 56 acres thanks to helicopter water dousings, park officials said. On Aug. 18, visitors parked at the Obstruction Point Road trailhead were escorted out of the road by park rangers and fire crews because of the Cox Valley Fire's smoke affecting visibility.
