After a year away from an NWAC championship final and two from an outright conference championship, Peninsula’s women are poised to reclaim their premier spot among Washington and Oregon junior colleges.

The Pirates, who clinched their sixth straight North Division championship more than a week ago, wrapped up a spotless conference schedule with two wins last week, their final tune-ups before postseason play that starts Nov. 5.

On Oct. 26, postseason hunger wasn’t enough to keep Whatcom from knocking off the Pirates. The Orcas, second in the division behind Peninsula going into the game, gave up two first half goals and never recovered in a 5-0 PC win in Bellingham.

Sydney Warren opened the scoring with a tally at 11 minutes and Kameryn Jury-Hale made it 2-0 at the 22-minute mark.

Coby Yoshimura, Hoku Afong and Jayna Morikowa added scores in the second half.

Audrey Barnham and Maddy Parton had two assists each.

“Whatcom is a tough team with a legitimate chance to finish second in the division,” PC coach Kanyon Anderson said. “We were able to play with focus and intensity despite not needing to win.”

Peninsula, now ranked No. 13 in the latest national junior college poll and No. 1 in the NWAC, picked up a big win on “Sophomore Day,” the final home match for second-year players, against Edmonds on Oct. 29.

Afong, Peninsula’s leading scorer with 14 goals, put two goals in the net in the first 15 minutes, assisted by Cierra Hamilton and Ellie Small. The Pirates then added four more scores before the half, coming from Barnham, Small, Parton and Sequim High grad Heidi Vereide.

The PC women, substituting liberally throughout the match, put up four more goals — all by freshmen — in the second half, two from Morikawa, a header goal from Emelie Small and a rebound goal by Kelly Kevershan.

Ten different players provided assists.

Sophomore keepers Cicely Warnick and Malia Henderson combined for the shutout.

It was Peninsula’s 15th shutout in 18 matches this season.

Already with a North Division title, Peninsula clinched a first round in the NWAC playoffs.

PC hosts a quarterfinal match at noon on Nov. 5 in Port Angeles, taking on the winner of the Nov. 2 Walla Walla/Tacoma match.
