Girls Swimming: Sixteen girls set personal records against PA

While a rivalry match-up with Port Angeles (6-0 in the Olympic League, 7-1 overall) may seem lopsided score-wise, the Lady Wolves swim team continues to improve and see more girls qualify in new events for districts.

While a rivalry match-up with Port Angeles (6-0 in the Olympic League, 7-1 overall) may seem lopsided score-wise, the Lady Wolves swim team continues to improve and see more girls qualify in new events for districts.

In the Oct. 13 match-up with PA, Sequim (3-2 overall) lost 135-48 in the Sequim YMCA, but 16 girls cut times in at least one event.

Joie Darminio swam 2 seconds faster in the 200 freestyle to earn a district’s time for the first time in the event at 2:23.96. She is also less than 1 second away from a district’s time in the 100 breast stroke after cutting half-a-second (1:23.98) against PA. Meguire Vander Velde is close to districts in the 100 butterfly (1:16.25) after cutting 2 seconds and she is less than 1 second from a districts time, too.

So far, eight girls — Isa Benitez, Darminio, Sonja Govertsen, Jasmine Itti, Sydnee Linnane, Anna Miehe, Sydney Swanson and Vander Velde — qualified for districts individually and in three different relays — the 200 medley, 200 free and 400 free.

Several other swimmers continue to set personal bests, too. They include: Angela Carillo Burge swimming 1 second faster in the 500 free (6:54.89) and 1 second faster in the 200 free (2:32.70); Benitez 1 second faster in the 100 backstroke (1:16.35); Annie Armstrong 0.20 of a second in both the 100 backstroke(1:18.65) and 50 free 31.73); Sydney Swanson 0.20 seconds in the 200 IM (2:44.37 district’s time) and Madeline Patterson 1 second in the 50 free (36.70).

Also, Carmen Wilwert 2 seconds in the 50 free (35.58); Aubree Young 2 seconds in the free (36.25); Stephanie Grow 1 second in the 50 free (30.47); Regan DeMetz 1 second in the 50 free (34.80) and 3 seconds in the 100 free (1:18.23); Kaitlyn Davis 0.20 seconds in the 50 free (38.68); Bailey Cauffman 2 seconds in the 50 free (37.36) and 5 seconds in the 100 free (1:25.97); Elise Schmierer 2 seconds in the 50 free (40.90) and 4 seconds in the 100 free (1:32.81); Alisa Garrett 0.20 seconds in the 50 free (30.22) and half a second in the 100 free (1:10.23); and Amanda Murphy 2 seconds in the 100 free (1:15.67).

This week, the Lady Wolves finish their regular season with two home meets at the YMCA of Sequim on Tuesday against Port Townsend (0-5) and North Kitsap (5-1) on Thursday, Oct. 20.

Those lead up to the Division Invite, aka the Last Chance Meet, on Tuesday, Oct. 25, at the William Shore Memorial Pool in Port Angeles.

The West Central District meet runs Nov. 4 at Hazen High School in Renton.
