WSU Master Gardener Rita Cirulis and Clallam County Solid Waste coordinator Meggan Uecker will provide home gardeners alternatives to burning yard debris this fall at noon Thursday, Oct. 13, in the county commissioners meeting room at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

Cirulis, recently retired from 25 years as an air quality specialist with regulatory agencies, will discuss conditions and regulations for burning yard debris as well as the impact of open burning of vegetation on the environment.

Uecker will present creative and practical uses of landscape debris for gardeners that reduce the need for burning. She will explain gardening and landscaping techniques that sequester carbon in the soil and its potential impact on soil health, air pollution and climate change.

Uecker will describe Hugelkulture, a process of creating raised beds using logs, branches, grass clippings and soil, as well as compost mounds and other techniques.
