Former state legislator autographs new book
Jim Buck, former state legislator, has written a book, "Journey to Honor," a true story about the Civil War. Josiah Crispin, a young Quaker who believes he must fight to save the Union, keeps a day-by-day account of the ill-disciplined and untrained new recruits called Yahoos. The Crispin diary provides the framework for Buck to recreate this true story. He has the Crispin diary, original letters, service records and after-action reports that provide many of the details.
Buck will be at Page Turners Etc, 901 S. C St., Port Angeles, from 3-5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, to discuss and sign his book. For more information, call 417-5055.
New driftwood art group meets
A new driftwood art group has emerged on the peninsula.
The Olympic Driftwood Sculptors will have its first regular meeting from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. today, Nov. 5, at the Sequim Prairie Grange Hall, 290 Macleay Road, Sequim.
There will be a short business meeting, followed by a work period where consultation and demonstrations with experienced artists will take place for all who participate. Visitors are welcome to attend and witness the evolution of members’ pieces from flotsam to skillfully finished art.
The new club is devoted to the LuRon method of driftwood sculpture and will feature such pieces in its shows but will encourage the creativity of a contemporary category that goes beyond the LuRon limits. Advanced classes, workshops and field trips for wood are ongoing.
The club’s certified LuRon instructor is the award-winning Tuttie Peetz, whose next class is in January. Prior to this date, prospective members can pick up instruction from experienced members at meeting workshops on the first Wednesday of each month. Peetz can be reached at 683-6860. Sequim artist releases first album
New age singer and songwriter Sophia Engkvist released her debut CD, "What if a Day," on Oct. 28. An open house celebration from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, at the Cays Productions Recording Studio, 62 Village Lane, will acknowledge the Sequim resident’s accomplishment. The public is invited.
Engkvist has lived in the area for 11 years and is the owner of Sophia’s Pet and House Sitting. She has worked alongside Jeremy Cays to co-produce her "masterpiece."
Others on the CD are Grammy winner Nancy Rumbel on the English horn and percussionist Tina Reichow from Sedona, Ariz. Local artists include Craig Buhler on the flute, Marlene Moore on the cello, Jason Taylor on the electric base, Larraine Larsen playing the concert harp and David Michael playing the zither.
