Veterans Corner: The VFW’s where it is happening!

Come out and dance! VFW Post 4760 has a band every Saturday from 6-8:30 p.m. at its hall at 169 E. Washington St. Nov. 15 is Silver and Gold, Nov. 22 is Round Trip, Nov. 29 is Still Kickin’ and Dec. 6 is Old Sidekicks.

The Armed Forces Community Service provides help for soldiers and their families. The Korean War Veterans have donated new baby clothes to the AFCS through the Soldier and Family Assistance Center for babies born at Madigan Hospital at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

These baby clothes provide needed support for soldiers’ children. If you have new baby clothes you would like to donate, e-mail Jerry at eletteor@msn.com. He will take them to the SFAC for distribution.

Get down!

They also show the Seahawks games. From noon until the end of the game there is a potluck, $1 jello shots, $4.50 Beast Mode martinis and raffle tickets sold with the drawing at the end of the game.

The Thanksgiving Day game will have ham and turkey provided by the Post — you bring a side dish. Sunday mornings from 9:30 a.m.-noon come and enjoy breakfast for $5 per person. On Nov. 23 is French toast and eggs, Nov. 30 will be eggs, hash browns and bacon and Dec. 7, blueberry pancakes and eggs. Sounds delicious!

Consider a tile

There is a Veterans Memorial in Sequim. It is at 544 N. Sequim Ave. at the flagpole at the Museum & Arts Center’s DeWitt Administration Center.

There are numerous engraved tiles honoring and memorializing service veterans and organizations. I have a tile there.

The tiles cost around $30 depending on what you want on them. Order forms are at www.macsequim.org, click on “Veterans Memorial Tiles.”

You can call Larry Klinefelter if you have questions at 582-1177 or e-mail him at LJK1551@live.com.

Ordering a tile for a family member or yourself is a great way to observe Veterans Day.

Soil help

The Home Depot has built raised beds for vegetables and flowers at the Outpost in Port Angeles. This is housing for veterans and their families. Hermann Brothers donated topsoil, but it is low in nitrogen. Some help from an expert is needed to give guidance on when and how and what to add to the soil so it will be ready for planting in the spring.

If you can help, call Cheri Tinker at 360-374-5252. This will be a way for the families to grow some of their food and teach the children about a garden.

Toys for Tots

Christmas is coming! The Marine Corps League will be collecting toys for the Toys For Tots program. They will be at the Sequim Walmart, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., starting the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving with the American Legion assisting. Please donate only new toys, no clothes; money also is welcome.

All toys will go to children in Clallam County.

Help out the Christmas Shop

The Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion once again will be providing a Christmas Shop for the residents of the Washington State Veterans Home in Port Orchard from Dec. 1-4.

The residents can pick out presents for family members, write Christmas cards and have the presents wrapped and mailed all free to them. This will be my fifth year helping. It is a very rewarding experience to see that these folks can participate in Christmas in spite of their circumstances.

We need money for postage, new gifts such as wallets, watches, jewelry sets, boxes of candy, gift sets of any kind, small appliances, family board games, etc. If you would like to help, donate money or gifts, contact me at 683-6419.
