College sports: WWU’s Barry, McMullin finish strong at conference finals

Sequim High grad Alex Barry will be among 12 Western Washington University Vikings athletes at the 2016 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships, held May 26-28 at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.

Barry, a freshman at WWU and 2015 SHS graduate, hit an NCAA II provisional mark in his first collegiate meet April 2 at the Saint Martin’s Open. Most recently, Barry took fourth with a throw of 189 feet, 9.75 inches at the 2016 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, held May 13-14 in Monmouth, Ore.

Jasmine McMullin, a 2013 Sequim High graduate and junior at WWU, added the outdoor triple jump title to her indoor title by leaping 38 feet, 9.75 inches at the 2016 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The WWU record holder for indoor triple jump and No. 2 all-time in the outdoor triple jump, McMullin also took second in the long jump (18 feet, 3 inches) at the conference final.


Catelli at NCAA finals, Beuke and UW second

Fields are now set for the first rounds of the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, and Sequim High grad Frank Catelli is among the combined 37 entries from the University of Washington to compete in the three-day West Prelims in Lawrence, Kan., from May 26-28.

Fresh off a shot put career-best at Pac-12s, Catelli — a senior at UW and 2012 SHS graduate who won the state 2A shot put title as a prep junior — is ranked 15th in the west in the event.

The NCAA West Prelims take the top 48 athletes in each event and 24 relays and work down to a final 12 that advance to the final site. The NCAA semifinals and finals are in Eugene, Ore., June 8-11.

Sequim High 2015 graduate Elise Beuke and her crewmates raced to a second-place finish in the second varsity eight race at the Pac-12 championships and Pacific Coast Rowing Championships held May 15 on Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif. Beuke and company raced to a 6:30 finish, a little less than four seconds behind California in the eight-team race.

The University of Washington women placed third overall in the championships. The UW women won the title in the third varsity eight race, but took second in second varsity eight and the varsity four and fourth in the varsity eight, finishing in third place overall. In the women’s final standings, California won with 45, followed by Stanford (35), Washington (33.5), Washington State (22.5), USC (22), UCLA (15.5) and Oregon State (8).
