Barbara J. Hendershot

June 9, 1930 – November 6, 2014

The family of Barbara J. Hendershot was saddened by her passing away on November 6, 2014, at age 84.

Barbara was born on June 9, 1930, the daughter of Sol and Mabel Guthrie, in Indianapolis, Indiana. She graduated from Southport High School in 1948 and married William F. Hendershot on May 28, 1949, at Edgewood United Methodist Church in Indianapolis.

Barbara was a loving and devoted wife, mother,

and grandmother who spent her life taking care

of her family. As a young wife, she supported her husband through college and grad school by typing students’

papers and working on campus.

During 65 years of marriage,they lived in Indianapolis;

Bloomington, Indiana; Madison, Wisconsin; Peoria and Libertyville, Illinois; and spent nearly thirty years in Elkhart, Indiana, as well as time in the San

Francisco Bay Area, San Diego, and the last eleven years in Sequim, Washington.

She was well-known throughout her life for her culinary expertise, her music, and her faith. She was always an active church member wherever she lived, playing piano and organ for worship and youth groups, teaching Sunday School for many years, chairing worship and liturgy committees, and

working as a church secretary.

She particularly valued serving as a Stephen

Minister, caring for others in the community.

She taught her children the value of education, the importance of treating all people with dignity and respect, and the love of Christ. She enjoyed traveling and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren, who have fond memories of her reading and telling stories, singing to them, and cooking with them.

She is survived by her husband, William

Hendershot, of Sequim; son, Michael Hendershot, living in Thailand; daughters, Suzan Hendershot, of Burbank, California, Sheryl (Dexter) Lehman, of Buffalo, Minnesota, and Nancy (Thomas) Reis, of Sequim; grandchildren, Jedidiah (Leigh) Hendershot, of Texas; Amanda ( Josh) Nord, and Ethan Hendershot, both of Elkhart, Indiana; Angela (Andrew) Harvala and David Lehman, of Minnesota; and Emily Reis and James Reis, both of Sequim.

She is also survived by her sister, Dottie (Coe) Kramer, of Goshen, IN, and seven great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, December 30, 2014, at 1 p.m. at Sequim Community Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Barbara’s name to the Sequim Community Church Faith Foundation, 950 North Fifth Avenue, Sequim, WA 98382.
