Sequim Irrigation Festival Pioneers announced
The Sequim Pioneer Association has selected Stephen Olts and Beverly Cays Hendrickson as Grand Pioneers for the 2017 Sequim Irrigation Festival. Honorary Pioneers will be Ron Parrish and Norma Govan Knapman Topness.
They will be honored at the annual Pioneer Dinner and at the Grand Parade in May.
Topic is plant-based diet
Dr. Kip Tulin will present a free WOW! Working on Wellness Forum entitled “Planted-Based Eating: Good For You, Good For The World” at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave., in Sequim. Tulin is the volunteer medical director for the Dungeness Valley Health and Wellness clinic. His presentation will outline what a plant-based diet means and he will offer evidence of how such a diet can benefit the individual as well as the environment. The Basic Urgent Care Clinic is open to patients on Mondays and Thursdays beginning at 5 p.m.

Thrift shop open
The Sequim Dungeness Hospital Guild’s Thrift Shop, 204 W. Bell St. in Sequim, will be open from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7.
Warm winter clothing for everyone is featured along with scarf and handbag accessories. Fine jewelry, furniture, kitchen dishes and cookware also are in stock. All white-tagged items will be marked half-price. Consignors and volunteers always are needed.

Chamber accepting Citizen of Year nominations
The Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce is accepting nominates for its Citizen of the Year award. This year’s honor recognizes members of the community who have dedicated “significant time and energy to the community above and beyond the expectations of their job” in 2016, chamber officials said.
Nominations for the awards are made to the chamber by residents of the Sequim Dungeness-Valley area. Deadline for nominations is Jan. 31. The awards will be presented at a Feb. 23 luncheon.

Business association to host Port of PA director
The Port Angeles Business Association hosts Karen Goschen, executive director of the Port of Port Angeles, at its next meeting set for 7:30-8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10, at Joshua’s Restaurant, 113 DelGuzzi Drive, Port Angeles. Goschen will have a report on the port’s activities and plans for 2017.
Applications sought for Feiro scholarship
Feiro Marine Life Center has opened applications on The Wash Board for a $750 dollar scholarship to support a Clallam County high school senior planning to attend higher education in 2017-2018.
Applications must be submitted at www.thewashboard.org by Jan. 15. The scholarship winner will be presented with the award at the annual Fish on the Fence gala on Saturday, Feb. 11. Tickets are now on sale for the gala at www.feiromarinelifecenter.org/fotf.
The scholarship is made possible by private donations to the Feiro Family Scholarship fund — started in honor of Art Feiro, one of the founders of the center and an educator and coach in Port Angeles.
‘Backyard Birding’ continues
“The Inside Story,” fourth in the series of “Backyard Birding” classes, will be from 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, Jan. 14, at the Dungeness River Audubon Center, Railroad Bridge Park.
Shirley Anderson and Ken Wiersema will lead a discussion about the anatomy, physiology and behaviors of birds. The series, hosted by members of the Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society, is intended for area residents who are interested in knowing more about birds seen locally. “Backyard Birding” can be taken either as individual classes or in a series.
The cost of each session is $5 and is free for anyone under 18. After the completion of five sessions, participants will be offered free membership in OPAS for one year.

Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4:30 p.m. at the Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St., on Tuesdays-Fridays. Suggested donation is $5 (60 and over), $8 guest and a 24-hour advance reservation is needed.
