Bowling: Team takes positive attitude into league tourney

Despite a tough season in the win-loss column, the Lady Wolves bowling team remain positive going into the league tournament, said head coach Randy Perry.

In their last match of the season, Bremerton (5-6) won six matches to one over Sequim (0-12) on Jan. 12, in Port Angeles’ Laurel Lanes.

The Knights won the first match 628-615, the second 692-628, and one of the baker games 138-115, while the Wolves took one baker game 132-118.

Earlier in the week, Klahowya (6-5) won at home 5-2 over the Wolves on Jan. 10, too.

One of the bright spots, Perry said was the attitude of the 11 girls on the team.

“They didn’t get down on themselves,” he said.

“They got more productive the last three weeks, too, where they’ve had their highest scores.”

On the season, Sequim rolled a team high of 667 on Jan. 5, against Olympic in Port Angeles, and a 171 baker game. Individually, Destiny Staus, a junior, struck a team high of 205 followed by Dakota Henderson a 171.

This week, seven Sequim bowlers compete in the Olympic League Tournament on Thursday, Jan. 19, at All-Star Lanes in Silverdale. They include Staus, Henderson, Quinn Danielson, Isabelle Dennis, Porter Funston, Hailee Smith and Flora Walchenbach.

Last year, Henderson and Staus earned spots at districts with Kaleigh Cassal at the league tournament.

For the team to earn a districts-berth, Perry said they need Henderson and Staus to bowl “on fire” between 160-180 and three more girls to bowl at least 120-130.

Last year, Staus was on pace to make the state tournament after her first game, Perry said, but her later games weren’t as strong.

He said the team’s goal is always to make state but if they don’t, then at least have their best bowling games of the year.
