Get ready for some summertime tunes.

The Sequim City Band this week announced its summer concert series — “Concerts at The James” — which kicks off on Sunday, May 7.

This is the 26th season of the concert band providing free public concerts at The James Center for the Performing Arts, 350 N. Blake Ave.

This year’s calendar features a small twist, with a Saturday evening concert set for Aug. 12.

The remainder of the concerts will be at 3 p.m., all on Sundays, save for the band’s special Fourth of July event (a Tuesday).

“We recommend an afternoon of patriotic and Americana music in Sequim, followed by continuing the celebration with the evening parade and fireworks in Port Angeles,” Vicky Blakesley, Sequim City Band board member, says.

Seeking musicians

The Sequim City Band is a all-volunteer group of musicians that “strives to promote the wide range of concert band music for the community’s enjoyment.” Musicians come from Clallam, Jefferson and Kitsap counties, including Sequim, Carlsborg, Port Angeles, Diamond Point, Port Townsend, Port Hadlock and Bremerton communities.

New musicians are invited to join the band. Rehearsals are at 7 p.m. Wednesdays at The James Center for the Performing Arts.

Interested musicians are encouraged to contact the band through the website (www.sequim cityband.org), which features the group’s music library. The band is particularly interested in recruiting musicians who play flute, trombone and percussion.

About the band

In addition to the “Concerts at The James” series, the band performs a winter concert series, with performances in Sequim and Port Angeles. These concerts focus on the symphonic band repertoire, from classical to modern compositions.

The Sequim City Band was formed in 1992 with 14 instrumental musicians.

Since its inception, the band has had three directors throughout its history: Chuck Swisher (founder, 1992-2008), Sanford Feibus (2008-2012) and Tyler Benedict (2013-present)

More than 70 musicians are part of the Sequim City Band, with 45-65 on stage for any given concert.

The group also provides scholarships for high school students who perform with the band.
