The Sequim Education Foundation resumes its annual Science Café series at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 12, at Paradise Restaurant, 703 N. Sequim Ave., with guest speaker Stanley Tomich, a senior engineer for instrumentation design and support for the Marine Sciences Laboratory.
Tomich gives an overview of the Marine Sciences Laboratory’s participation in tidal energy research activities in Sequim Bay. Among the topics will be the laboratory testing of technologies that monitor tidal turbines as well as infrastructure support to test scale model tidal turbines. This work is funded by the Department of Energy’s Water Power Technologies Office.
Tomich has developed instrumentation related to marine hydro-kinetic energy production. His systems support data acquisition, environmental monitoring and marine applications for research in tidal power, wave power and off-shore wind power efforts to generate renewable energy from the ocean environment.
A community service of the Sequim Education Foundation, these events are is free and donations are accepted for the Sequim School District’s Science Club run by Debra Beckett. Programs present expert speakers for adult and young adult audiences interested in current developments in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Science Café events are held on the second Tuesday of the month at the Paradise Restaurant. Admission is free and food and beverages are available for purchase.
