Girls soccer: Wolves scoring spree stops Coupeville

A second-half scoring spree last week helped the Wolves get back to .500.

After splitting their first two games in non-league match-ups, Sequim (0-1 in the Olympic League, 2-2 overall) opened league play with a 4-1 loss at Olympic (2-0, 3-0-1) on Sept. 12.

However, the Wolves recovered to win 4-1 at home in another non-league game against Coupeville (2-0, 3-2) two days later.

Sequim coach Derek Vander Velde said despite the loss, only a few hiccups led the Trojans to score.

“The girls fought tirelessly all 80 minutes,” he said. “Most teams would implode dropping a goal or two down but the girls kept their intensity, worked together and battled the Trojans. These girls are mentally tough and trust each other on the field.”

Sequim’s Yana Hoesel assisted Alexis Smith on a corner kick to give the Wolves their lone goal.

Back in Sequim, both Wolves teams were held scoreless through halftime, but Vander Velde said a few minor adjustments led to four goals within about 15 minutes.

Hoesel scored early in the second half in the 44th minute followed by two goals by forward Hope Glasser at 52 minutes and three minutes later.

Jessica Dietzman scored Sequim’s fourth goal at 60 minutes.

For the game, Adare McMinn had two assists while Glasser and Olivia Hare each had one.

Both Hare and Hoesel split time at goalkeeper too.

Sequim is scheduled to host North Mason (0-2, 0-3-1) on Tuesday, Sept. 19, and they travel to North Kitsap (2-0, 3-1) on Thursday, Sept. 21.
