County commissioner talks tax initiative
Clallam County commissioner Mark Ozias will lead a panel discussion on the upcoming Juvenile Justice Tax Initiative from 6-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18, at the Clallam County Democratic Headquarters, 124-A W. First St. teh discussion includes a time for a question-and-answer session. The event is open to the public. Proponents of the Juvenile Justice Tax Initiative seek a one-tenth of 1 percent sales tax increase to support local juvenile services.
City requests help with storm drains
The National Weather Service is predicting heavy rains with wind on Wednesday night, Oct. 18, and into Thursday morning, Oct. 19. A large quantity of leaves are anticipated be falling from area trees. The City of Sequim Public Works crew will be out working to clear leaves and debris from storm drains, city officials say, but they ask residents and business owners to clear the drains in front of their property and help to reduce the risk of flooding on city streets. Shelter Providers to meet in Port Angeles
The Shelter Providers Network of Clallam County meets in Port Angeles from 10-11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18, in the commissioner’s meeting room of the historic Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. 4th St., Port Angeles. Shelter Providers will hear from OlyCAP about facets of Jefferson County’s Proposition 1 and the intent of the Shelter Providers Regional Forum coming up in November.

County meeting set
The Clallam County Planning Commission meets at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18, at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.
Agenda items include findings and conclusions for two Comprehensive Plan and Zoning Map applications, findings and conclusions of the Draft Shoreline Master Program for the Clallam County Board of Commissioners to update and replace, and a work session to discuss issues and possible updates of the Clallam County Land Division Code regarding subdivisions.

Guild thrift shop is open Saturday
The Sequim Dungeness Hospital Guild’s thrift shop at 204 W. Bell St., Sequim, will be open 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21. Featured will be several sets of fine china, unusual wine glasses, and halloween costumes and decor. Puzzles, books, kitchen appliances, gently-used fall clothing, fine jewelry and designer handbags also round out the inventory. All white tagged items will be marked half price.

Learn about lighthouse at annual meeting
The New Dungeness Light Station Association will hold its annual meeting from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 Blake Ave., Sequim. This is a free event and all are welcome. Learn about the Lighthouse Association and how to become involved and/or volunteer, and how to win a week-long stay at the lighthouse. Refreshments will be served and there will be a silent auction.
Kathy Edmonds, Executive Director of the Clallam County Historical Society, is the featured speaker, providing insight into the relationship between history and local lighthouses.
The New Dungeness Light Station Association is a non-profit organization formed in 1994 whose purpose is to restore and maintain the New Dungeness Lighthouse.
Help local youths with Project Linus
The Project Linus Make a Difference Day is set for 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, at Gardiner Community Center, 980 Old Gardiner Road.
Project Linus is a non-profit group that is collecting new handmade blankets (quilted, fleece, knit or crochet) for children in need. Blankets go to local foster children, the CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) program and to Seattle Children’s Hospital.
The event is an open house to collect blankets and materials and share what supplies volunteers with Project Linus have. This is also a time for others to see what Project Linus is about.

Free dinner scheduled at Trinity United
A free community dinner will be served at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave.
The meal includes barbecued chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, vegetables, green salad, dessert and beverages.
Reservations are required and may be made by phoning the church at 360-683-5367 between 9 a.m.-2 p.m. the Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday before the dinner or by email to dinnerstumc@aol.com.
The church normally presents the dinners on the last Thursday of each month, though the November dinner will be on Thanksgiving, Nov. 23.
Grange puts on a pumpkin party, fair
The Sequim Prairie Grange Pumpkin Party and Country Fair is set for 4-7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, at the Glenda Clark Memorial Kitchen behind the grange hall, 290 Macleay Road.
The doors to the hall open at 4:30 p.m. for the Country Fair. Food will be available for purchase in the kitchen.

Auction, dinner to help end homelessness
Serenity House of Clallam County hosts The Art of Ending Homelessness, the second-annual fine art auction and dinner, set for 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28 at Sunland Golf & Country Club, 109 Hilltop Dr., Sequim.
Local and international artists have contributed paintings, prints, sculptures and jewelry for the event’s auction.

Taco Tuesday set at Fairview Grange
Taco Tuesday and a silent auction will be held at the Fairview Grange (161 Lake Farm Road, Port Angeles) starting at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24.
The event features all-you-can-eat tacos, beans, rice and ice cream. Water, coffee and punch will also be served. Cost is $8; children younger than 12 are free. Silent auction items are appreciated.

Get help for anxiety, depression issues
A confidential, supportive group is forming locally, for participants seeking practical and creative ways of living with depression and anxiety.
The group will use both participant and facilitator expertise to expand and strengthen the coping strategies needed in everyday lives.
The group limit is eight; pre-registration is required by calling 360-531-4157. The group is facilitated by Diane Porter, M.A. and Ph.D candidate-somatic psychology.
