Merinda Knight, a staff member at Best Friend Nutrition since October 2016, recently earned a “Pet Food Nutrition Specialist” certification to support her work as a customer specialist at the Sequim business.
Certification coursework from online DNM University included nine modules of study and final exam focusing on multiple areas of dog and cat nutrition. These modules included digestive systems and health, the pet food industry and regulation, food processing, macronutrients/micronutrients, energy density requirements and life stage feeding, pet food processing, special needs nutrition and diets, evaluating source ingredients and more.

Women in Agriculture conference set
On Nov. 18, the 2017 Women in Agriculture Conference offers to women in Washington state, Idaho, Oregon, Montana and Alaska a unique opportunity to gather in 40 different locations for a one-day event featuring speakers, stories, networking with other producers and advice for learning new skills.
The “We Can Do It” event locally is held at Peninsula College, 1502 E Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles. Local panelists include Michele Canale of North Olympic Land Trust, Sonya Lynn of Craft3, Sarah McCarthey of Dungeness Valley Creamery and Anna Swanberg of Bent Gate Farms. They will talk about the challenges they faced, how they used a mentor to develop their skills and the difference it has made in their businesses.

Labor laws talk set in Sequim
A representative from Washington’s Department of Labor and Industries will discuss changes in state labor laws at a free seminar set for 4-5:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30, at the Holiday Inn Express, 1441 E. Washington St., Sequim.
Starting Jan. 1, employers in Washington state will be required to provide their employees with paid sick leave. Initiative 1433, which was approved by Washington voters in fall 2016, contains four changes to state law. A state representative will give an overview of the initiative.
