Sequim’s Hayden Gresli won his division at 160 pounds at the North Mason Hawkins Memorial Classic last weekend, helping the Wolves finish sixth out of 16 teams.
Sequim teammates Amara Sayer (113-118 pounds), Kiara Pierson (136-140) also won their divisions in the girls’ meet on Dec. 23.
Also taking first place at the girls’ meet were Port Townsend’s Veda Dosey at 144 pounds and Brenna Franklin at 170 pounds.
The Sequim boys finished with 95 points, edging Port Angeles, which finished seventh at 87 points. Three local teams finished in the top 10 with Port Townsend taking 10th at 61 points. North Kitsap won the meet with 152.5 points.
Gresli won three matches en route to his title. After a first round bye, Gresli edged Daniel Pulley of North Mason, 32, then pinned Klahowya’s Austin Stahl in 3:25 in the semifinals. Gresli captured the weight class title with a 12-2 major decision over Anthony Poggi of North Kitsap.
Jamie Schroepfer took second place at 132 pounds, pinning Gig Harbor’s Adam Oberstar in 1:30 in the quarterfinals and Reese Martin of Tumwater in 3:54 in the semifinals; Miguel Gaspar-Hernandez of North Mason pinned Schroepfer in the finals.
Sequim’s Amaran Sauiluma recovered from a one-point opening round loss to go 3-1 at 195 pounds. Sauiluma dropped a 10-9 decision to JC Cortez of Evergreen/Tyee, then picked up consecutive pins against Klahowya’s Riley Farrell (2:51), Gig Harbor’s Simon Atwill (1:00) and North Kitsap’s Josh Snider (1:55).
After a three-point first round loss, Sequim’s Ben Newell picked up three consecutive wins at 145 pounds to go 3-1. He pinned Kaillou Thao of Evergreen/Tyee in 1:26, topped Jacob Diehl of North Kitsap 9-0 and pinned Khalphan Yusufu of Evergreen/Tyee in 2:47.
Chris Puksta also earned a strong finish, going 2-1 at 152 pounds. He earned a 10-5 decision over Tumwater’s Kane Palmer. After a loss in the semifinals, he rebounded with a 5-0 win over Port Angles’ Jackson Larson.
Pierson needed just 76 seconds for her 136-140 championship as she picked up pins against Port Townsend’s Sarah Clark (14 seconds), Klahowya’s Kim Mulligan (17 seconds) and Annika Taylor of North Kitsap (45 seconds). Pierson also competed in the boys’ 138-pound bracket and went 2-2, picking up pins against Jordaan Weston of Tumwater and Sequim teammate Garrett Harris.
Sayer earned pins of Emerald Ridge’s Kalli Tooker (41 seconds), Emillia Nunn of Port Townsend (22 seconds) and Katarina Fernandez of Central Kitsap (4:37) for the 113-118 title.
In the girls’ 146-148 division, Sequim’s Aleah Chen took second place, earning a first round pin of Tenino’s Natalie Dodge in the process. Emily Dodson took third in a 120-123 bracket, pinning Claire Tyson of Port Angeles in 1:15.
