Sequim’s Wolves had a chance to get themselves back in the race for an Olympic League playoff seed last week with four home games in six days.

But a string of tough opponents left Sequim 1-3 on their home-stand, including an 0-2 mark against league foes.

“Our Achilles’ heel has been closing out quarters,” Sequim coach Greg Glasser said. “We’ve been competitive with just about everybody.”

Following a 62-42 loss to North Kitsap on Jan. 11, Sequim got out to a fast start but had to hold off a resilient Chimacum squad in a 62-51, non-league victory on Jan. 13.

Jackson Oliver had 17 points and seven rebounds, Nick Faunce scored 12 points and Nick Despain added eight points, five assists and five steals in the win.

James Porter led Chimacum with 17 points.

Sequim led 23-10 after the first quarter and 33-16 at halftime but the visiting Cowboys trimmed SHS’s lead to single digits several times in the final quarter.

“They made some good adjustments,” Greg Glasser said. “We knew they were going to compete.”

Sequim, who shot 55 percent from the field and forced 19 Chimacum turnovers, also got 10 points from Payton Glasser.

Two days later, Sequim kept pace with visiting Bremerton for two quarters but saw the Knights pull away in the third quarter and prevail, 64-49.

Japrea Pedesclaux and Atyus Powell paced Bremerton with 15 points each as the Knights shot comfortably well (53 percent) and forced 23 Sequim turnovers.

Payton Glasser had a breakout game for Sequim, scoring 25 points on 10-for-17 shooting. Oliver scored nine points and Faunce added seven in defeat.

On Jan. 16, Sequim took a slim (two-point) lead into the final quarter but couldn’t hold it, falling to Sammamish 47-43 in a non-league loss.

Justin Jordan had 11 points for Sammamish, who won despite shooting just 16-of-49 (33 percent) from the field.

Payton Glasser led Sequim with 15 points and six rebounds, and Oliver added 10 points. The Wolves had trouble handling the ball, however, committing another 23 turnovers.

Looking ahead

Sequim was slated to play at Kingston on Jan. 19 — results of the game were not available at press time.

The Wolves host Olympic on Jan. 22 and are at North Mason on Jan. 26. Sequim hosts rival Port Angeles on Jan. 29 before finishing the regular season with a road matchup at North Kitsap on Feb. 2.
