Sequim’s Wolves locked up second place in the Olympic League 2A division with a win over the Bremerton Knights on May 1.

Though Sequim lost out on a chance at the league championship when they fell to Kingston 3-2 on April 27, they have a strong seed headed into Saturday night’s West Central District playoff game.

The Wolves (9-3-0 in Olympic League play, 10-4-2 overall) with take on the Orting Cardinals () at 7 p.m. on May 5 at North Kitsap High School in Poulsbo.

They’ll head into the game with a pair of record-setting (or tying) players: senior Liam Harris set the school mark with his 41st career goal on April 24 against Port Angeles, and sophomore Ryan Tolberd tied the school mark for regular-season scores with 17, set by Casey Nagler in 2005. Tolberd can match or pass Nagler’s full season mark of 18 (also set in 2005) with a score or scores against Orting.

The Wolves could have finished as low as fourth in league play but made sure they’d get the No. 2 seed with a 5-1 win over Bremerton on Senior Night last Tuesday (SHS owned a tiebreaker against North Kitsap, who also finished 8-3 in league).

“We came within a couple of inches of winning the league,” Sequim coach Dave Brasher said. “We’re playing really well, everyone is contributing. We led the league in goals (52 in 12 league games) and we’re getting goals from all over the place,” he said.

“It will be fun to see how far we can go,” Brasher said.

Against Bremerton, Tolberd scored a pair of goals while Eli Gish, Hayuk Minano and Addison Berg all had scores. Harris had two assists while Evan James had an assist. Liam Stevenson, normally a goalkeeper, also tallied an assist playing offense.

Sequim’s Nick Janikic nearly had a shutout in goal, but Bremerton managed its only goal in the final minute on a penalty kick.
