Four local businesses are building 10-foot by 10-foot by 10-foot sculptures for the inaugural Canstruction® event, to benefit Sequim and Port Angeles food banks.

First Federal, Merrill & Ring, Windermere and Peninsula Behavioral Health submitted plans for the king-size sculptures in which more than 8,000 cans of food will be used. The community is invited to a public viewing from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, at Peninsula Behavioral Health, 118 E. Eighth St., Port Angeles. A donation of one food can is requested at the door. Everyone may cast a vote for their favorite sculpture to determine the “People’s Choice” winner.

Judges for the contest (categories include Best Meal, Best Use of Labels, Structural Integrity, Jurors’ Favorite and Honorable Mention) are graphic artist Laurel Black; Deb Moriarty, Feiro Marine Life Center executive director; Lawrence Moroles, U.S. Coast Guard Command Master Chief; U.S. Navy Capt. Jonathan Picker; and judge Rick Porter.

After the competition, sculptures are dismantled and the food will be distributed among the two local food banks and the residential program at Peninsula Behavioral Health.
