Five Acre School students are turning off all screens for “Turn on the Brain Week,†May 17-21.
That means no TV, computer, handheld games, DVD players or cell phones.
A different theme is presented daily to promote the brain and body connection and what it needs to be satisfied.
The Discovery class, grades kindergarten-three, started Monday with exercise; Wednesday is naturalist day with a hike through the woods to the beach to learn about how nature benefits our brains; and Thursday is nutrition day.
The Explorer class, grades three-six, started the week with a pet parade and how caring for a pet calms the nervous system and encourages altruism; Wednesday they will do Zumba and dance to drumming; and Thursday students will build a brain and body museum.
Both classes learned about sleep on Tuesday and on Friday will dress as their favorite storybook character and read the story to their classes.
The week will close with an all-school sleepover following a night hike, a campfire and snacks. Parents and students will sleep in tents.
Five Acre School is at 515 Lotzgesell Road, Sequim, and can be reached at 681-7255 or fiveacre@olympus.net.
