A Port Angeles man lost consciousness while driving on U.S. Highway 101 near Sequim Bay State Park before sideswiping two vehicles in the oncoming lane and hitting several trees.

The driver, Joseph L. Tyler, 54, and his passenger, Tonya M. Tyler, 50, also of Port Angeles, were injured and were transported to Olympic Medical Center after the wreck early Wednesday evening, Aug. 15, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Joseph L. Tyler was in satisfactory condition on Thursday, Aug. 16, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Tonya M. Tyler was treated and discharged.

A third passenger, Zainalabiden Alwaey, 28, of Port Angeles was not injured.

The State Patrol reported that there were no other injuries.

The State Patrol said Tyler was driving his 2004 Suzuki SUV eastbound 5 miles east of Sequim when, because of a medical condition, he lost consciousness.

Tyler crossed into the westbound lane, sideswiping a 2013 Kia Soul driven by Sonya R. White, 58, of Port Angeles, and a 2011 Winnebago Sprinter motorhome driven by Michael J. Moore, 64, of Morton.

Tyler then left the roadway struck several trees before coming to a stop.

Tyler’s vehicle was totally destroyed.

The damaged Kia and Winnebago were driven from the scene.

The State Patrol said drugs and alcohol were not involved, and that those involved in the wreck were wearing seat belts.
