Smith’s super round at SunLand Golf Course

Bill Smith, 93, completed one of the rarest of all golf feats, shooting an 18-hole round of golf below his age. Smith shot an 87 at SunLand Golf Course on Sept. 22, topping his age by a full six strokes.

P.A. Speedway hosts fan appreciation night

Port Angeles Speedway opens its doors for free at its fan appreciation night Oct. 4. Spectator gates will open at 4 p.m. Racers begin heat laps at 4 p.m. with racing heats starting at 6:30 p.m. Classes on the schedule include stock cars, hobby stocks and hornets.

Hockey rolls into town

Pick-up roller hockey is back in full slap-shot swing this fall at the Olympic Skate Center, at the corner of East Seventh and South Chase streets, Port Angeles.

Players of all skill levels are invited to strap on some inline or quad skates, grab a stick and have fun from 7-9 p.m. every Wednesday during pick-up play.

The cost is $5 for players and goalies play for free. The pick-up format is a relaxed, yet organized three-on-three scrimmage.

Youth roller hockey league sign-ups begin at 6 p.m. Oct. 1 at the Olympic Skate Center. The league for 7- to 13-year-olds begins Oct. 22 and lasts about eight weeks with one practice and one organized game per week.

YMCA offers fall sports

The Clallam County YMCA in Port Angeles (302 S. Francis St.) offers sailing, dodgeball and racquetball for youths and adults this fall.

Rick Porter instructs sailing classes for participants ages 10 and older. Sailing days are seven Saturdays during the fall: Oct. 11, 18, 25 and Nov. 8, 15 and 22. Registration is open until Oct. 11. Cost is $80 for YMCA members, $100 for nonmembers. Those younger than 12 need an adult guardian to be present for the first class.

Dodgeball is open to youths in fourth grade up to adults. Play is on Fridays through Oct. 24. Members play for free while nonmembers pay $3 at the door. Youths in grades four-five play from 3:30-5 p.m. while youths in grades six-eight play from 5:30-

7 p.m. High school-aged players and adults play from 7:30-9 p.m.

The YMCA hosts an adult coed racquetball tournament on Mondays and Wednesdays Oct. 6-Nov. 12. Participants need to register by Oct. 3. Cost is $15 for YMCA members, $25 for nonmembers.

U-16 fastpitch team holds tryouts at college

The Impact U-16 girls fastpitch team hosts tryouts at 1 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Peninsula College ballfield, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles.

Players born Jan. 1, 1992, through Dec. 31, 1993, are eligible.

Mixed doubles tennis tourney set for Oct. 19

The Peninsula Tennis Club wraps up the 2008 season with a one-day, mixed doubles tournament Oct. 19 at the Erickson Park courts in Port Angeles.

Tourney play is based on the combined level of the partners. Participants may enter at the team 6.0, 7.0, 7.5 or 8.0 level. Event committee chairwomen Laurel Cripe and Christy Brown reserve the right to place teams in the appropriate category.

Play is round-robin among same-level between 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Entries may be submitted via phone to 460-2588 or via e-mail to peninsulatennisclub@olypen.com. Entry fees are $5 per player for club members, $10 per player for nonmembers. Entry deadline is Oct. 13. The committee is arranging with participants to bring potluck snacks for the event.

Coed volleyball

registration opens

Team registration packets for the 2008-2009 adult coed volleyball fall/winter season are available now at the city of Port Angeles Parks & Recreation District.

Age restrictions are high school-aged players (not involved in a fall, winter or spring sport) and older. The season begins in October. Cost is $275 for sponsor fee plus $20 per player living in Port Angeles, $25 for those living outside Port Angeles. Individual players can sign up and be put on a "free agent" list.

Games are played at Stevens Middle School, 1139 W. 14th St., Port Angeles.

Football booster tourney Oct. 11 at SunLand

The Sequim Football Booster Club hosts a four-person scramble at 11 a.m., Oct. 11 at SunLand Golf Course, 109 Hilltop Drive, Sequim.

Cost is $75 per person or $300 per team; fee includes drinks, greens fees and caddies – members of the Sequim High football team. Carts are available for $10 each.

Tourney organizers are seeking sponsors for holes, products, gift certificates and more.
